These are the words that we think of when we think of Norman Clark.
After a well fought battle with cancer, Norm Clark of Tigard passed away on March 14 with his loving wife of 60 years, Barbro, by his side. Norm was born on January 12, 1934 to Marian and William Clark joining an older brother, Forrest. When Norm was a small child, his father passed away. Norm’s mother then met and married Charlie Simmons and they blessed Norm with two more brothers and a sister.
In 1951, Norm enlisted in the Marines and fought in the Korean Conflict. After his service in the Marines, he attended the University of Oregon and Portland State University, and he loved his Political Science classes. He went on to law school and graduated from Northwestern College of Law in 1962.
Norm met the love of his life, Barbro, while they were both working at Insurance Company of Oregon. They married on September 7, 1962, and settled in Portland where they raised their two daughters, Candace and Cindi.
After working briefly in law and as the superintendent of claims at the insurance company, Norm found his real passion – being on the open road and driving trucks. So, he spent the rest of his career driving trucks for Chappell’s Trucking, US Bank, and Rose City Moving & Storage. No matter what was going on in his life, Norm always made sure that he was available to help his daughters move into their new apartment or house.
Norm and Barbro combined their love of travel and Dixieland Jazz by attending the Sacramento Dixieland Jazz Festival for many years, where they would dance and dance and dance. Their travels took them to Israel, as well as a 9-week road trip from the West Coast to the East Coast, to the South Coast and then back home. Early in their marriage, Norm and Barbro owned a houseboat and a cabin cruiser - he loved fishing the ocean for salmon and cruising up North to the San Juan Islands.
Norm was an avid reader, and his favorite subject was history. He also loved to share his stories about the adventures and/or antics of he and his friends, which would always bring many laughs. Norm also loved to golf - so much that he and Barbro bought a house on a golf course.
He was a member of the Tigard American Legion Post #158, the Portland Elks Lodge #142, and Beaverton Foursquare Church.
Norm is survived and very much missed by his wife Barbro; Daughters, Candace (Kevin) Carsh, and Cindi (Bob) Jones; Grandchildren, Alexander, Austin, Haley, and Hunter; Brothers, Forrest Simmons, Lee (Paula) Simmons, and Verne (Carol) Simmons; Sister, Becky (Jim) Robinson; Many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at Beaverton Foursquare Church’s West Chapel on Tuesday March 28 at 1:00pm. The Committal with Military Honors will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Wednesday, March 29 at 11:00am.
