Dear Grandma,
It's taken me a while to write something to you, not because I was afraid to write something but because I didn't feel I had the right words to say. I don't even know how to begin to describe how great a person you were and how much you meant to me. You were one of the most amazing people ever. You were kind and loving no matter what. I can't remember a single time where you were angry with or mad at me. You always made me smile and laugh, even when I was upset. You knew how to reach me in ways that no one else ever will. I love you, and I will always miss you.

Grandma loved banana popsicles. They were always in the freezer when I would visit. Whenever I visited, we would sit at the table in the kitchen and eat banana popsicles. We would talk about how I was doing in school or about how my summer was so far. Those have been some of my favorite memories for a long time. Every time I see a banana popsicle in the store, I will remember the good times we had over a popsicle and smile.

Dear Grandma, 
Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss you dearly. But, I can't help but smile when I think of you. I always had an amazing time visiting with you and it was hard not to have a smile on my face when I was around you. I think it's fitting that I have to smile when I think of you. My 17th birthday passed recently and I'll admit, I cried. My counselor at school told me that the hardest parts are going to be all the first without you, the birthdays, the holidays, etc. That is somewhat true. It feels like the hardest part of it all. But I think that the hardest part isn't the firsts, the hardest part is knowing that I will see you again in heaven. The hardest part is knowing that that won't be for such a long time. I will always remember the last time I saw you, thanksgiving of 2019. We were all joyful just spending time with you, Papa, and Auntie Joy. If I could have one wish, I would wish that I could give you one last hug.

Grandma,
It seems that God gave me the gift of a perfect last memory with you. I remember our last Thanksgiving together. We spent that time together as a family, filling ourselves up with food, then spending the rest of our night together going through picture books and sharing stories. The peace that I felt in that moment was the peace that I have always felt with you and now when I am thinking of you. I am so thankful that we moved to Colorado and got to spend more time with you than we ever have before. Thank you for everything, your unconditional love, your wisdom, and encouragement, I always have and always will love you.

Dear Mama,
I have so many wonderful memories of you.  How can I even begin to narrow it down?  I have been so blessed to have you as my mother and have you be a grandma to Richard, Sean and Trevor.
On my birthday, when I was little, you would make animal-shaped cakes for me.  As an adult, even when we weren't together, you always made sure to send me a package with different things that you knew I liked.  That always made me feel special.  My last birthday with you, number 45, we were together in Denver.  The weekend before my birthday, you and Daddy took me to the Bluebird Cafe.  That has become one of my favorite restaurants. 
I recall how, almost 23 years ago, you came to Hawaii for the birth of my first-born, Richard.  I remember how you taught me to bathe him and do all the other things I needed to do as a new mother.  You loved being a mother and a grandmother!

"If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn't love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God's secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn't love others, I would be nothing.  If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it, but if I didn't love others, I would have gained nothing.  Now we see things imperfectly like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity.  All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely."  
You have left such a powerful legacy of God's love.  I will strive to do the same.
I love you, Mama and I miss you so much!  I am so glad to know that you are safe, healthy and alive in Heaven and that one day, I will see you again.

The first impression I had of Margie was that she was a real "lady" in every sense of the word.  She dressed like a lady, and acted like a lady.  She was classy.

She was very strong in her faith, and an encouragement to me when she lived close to us.  Even after she and Bob moved further away, she still lifted us up with cards and phone calls.

Not too many months after my husband died, Margie invited me to go to the  coast overnight with them.   She took me to meet relatives there----this while they were celebrating their anniversary------which should have been for them alone.  That's God's love!

When our families were young and Bob and Margie lived in Vernonia we would go up to visit.  Margie would make us a lovely meal.   She was a good cook, and I took home some recipes from her during our 'low budget' years, that were very creative.  And she sent home food to share from their meager store.  I still use the recipes.  She had a gift for hospitality.

I remember a lovely visit to Margie's mother's home when they were in Portland.

Most of all I remember Margie's love for the Lord.  The last time I saw her was in Denver in 2016 when my granddaughter entered medical school.  We had lunch together.  Margie's faith was stronger than ever, she was still the same beautiful lady I met 50+ years before at Cascade College.  She was consistently faithful to the Lord.  She raised a wonderful family and was a wonderful helpmate to Bob.  

She'll be missed.

-The four churches we served have their own stories to tell: hosting women's meetings and directing church choirs.
-Then, her service with Portland Christian School, in the office and in substitute teaching.
-Then, The Salvation Army with its many stories.  First,  the Quarters (Parsonages)-the furniture, linen and dishware were provided for the Officer's (Pastor's).  When Margie was having a yard sale (inside and out), she was earnestly asked, "How can you give up your nice furniture?"  Her answer? "The Lord helps us do what we need to do."  Second, The wearing of the uniform.  The uniform identifies Officers as well as signifying responsibility.  As a well-groomed woman, tastefully dressed, that became an issue with her.  But, she made that a spiritual issue that she surrendered to the Lord, for the sake of the Call to the ministry!

"Witnesses of a Life Well-Lived"

What can be said about Margie, what her spiritual legacy means, to family, friends and others?  Perhaps it is best to let the witnesses tell the story.
-A cousin relates how Margie found the Lord: as a young boy, the cousin was saved at a Youth For Christ Rally.  His mother phoned her sister, Margie's mom.  As Margie's parents excitedly shared the news, this raised a question for Margie (7 years old).  "Aren't I a Christian, since my parents are Christians?"  They explained, and then she too asked the Lord into her heart.  This was confirmed a few years later, as she made a public profession at church.
-A close friend in High School tells of Margie inviting her to a Youth For Christ Club at their High School.  That changed her life, leading her to Cascade Christian College (with Margie), marrying a minister, serving in churches up to their retirement.  (As an aside, she also influence my life, pointing me out to my future bride and who also served as a bridesmaid in our wedding.)  Years later, this friend searched on-line until she found Margie's phone number and confirmed, once again, Margie's spiritual influence on her life, just the week before Margie's Home-going!
-A fellow member of the church youth group, some twenty years later, approached Margie at another couple's 50th Wedding Anniversary party, to confirm to her that her Christian walk in the youth group did not go unnoticed.  He confessed that if he had followed Margie's example and wasn't rebellious against his parents' Christian upbringing, it would have saved him the sorrow of several divorces.
-Margie's own life speaks of her hard work.  She worked to pay for her own years of college and after marriage, continuing to work to buy groceries and pay the rent, while I paid for college.  A variation of this continued through Seminary, during which we started our family.


Dear Mama,

You were the best mama a daughter could ever have.  You were a loving and good mama.
You were a classy lady in the way that you lived your life and in the clothes you wore.  You were beautiful in your spirit and in your outward beauty.  Your love for the Lord Jesus shown through in your glowing , sweet face and in the love that you showed to others.
You laughed easily and heartily.  You loved life.  You didn't hold grudges.
We loved shopping for clothes together.  We laughed in the fitting room together.  Sometimes we would go out to lunch after shopping for awhile.  After lunch you would sometimes say, "Well, I think we have enough strength to go for another round of shopping."
You loved music, especially hymns.  You loved watching your Gaither music videos.  Your last day on this Earth you were watching a Gaither video.  You were getting closer to Jesus the last 20 years of your life, by praying and reading the Word daily.  You were getting ready to enter the throne room of Heaven to worship Jesus in person.
I remember one time you, Daddy and I were talking about being closer to Jesus.  Then you looked me square in the face and said, "That's what I want for you, Joy."
On the night of your last day on this Earth, while you were laying on your bed and I was standing by your bed, looking at you, you looked at me and said, "Don't worry about me too much, Joy."  Then you said, "Thank you for taking good care of me."
I want to carry on your legacy of love and live for the Lord Jesus too.  I want to grow closer to Him.

My memories of Marjorie always brings a smile and joy to my heart.  She was a woman who was settled in her faith in Jesus Christ.  He was her foundation, identity and confidence.  Marjorie may not have always appeared to be bold -- but she was bold in her heart when it came to knowing the truth of Scripture and the reality of God's grace!  In addition, Marjorie loved music and especially the joy of singing for the glory of her precious Lord and Savior.  I can see her looking at her music, but also feeling the truth of the words sung as she sang with others or a beautiful solo.  But my favorite memory of Marjorie is remembering how proud she was to be a Salvation Army officer -- not for status, but for the opportunity to serve.  Marjorie's heart was filled with God's love to share with others -- her husband, family and all.  She was a woman of faith, fun and my friend.  

Major Marge was such an incredible lady who loved the Lord and her family.  Brian and I have such fond memories or her and Major Bob when we did our summer assignment in Juneau.  They were so gracious and kind to our family.  Please know that your family is in our prayers.

Major Marge was a wonderful woman.  She was always kind to me when I was growing up in Denver.  She will be missed by many.  I am praying for your family.

I met Major Margie when I began attending the Springfield, OR corps in 1989.  Her and her husband were the Corps Officers at the time and I remember thinking  "I've never met a more soft spoken, nice couple in my life."  The Hall's soon became family to me and I am forever grateful for the time I spent under their mentor-ship.   Major Margie was incredibly talented and uniquely humble; a wonderful combination.  She was an amazing cook.  I enjoyed many meals at her kitchen table.  No matter how much time passed between our visits, we were always able to pick up right where we left off.  I am grateful to have known her and my life is much richer because I did.  I look forward to picking up where we left off when I see you again in Heaven Momma Hall.  Rest in peace, my friend. 

Margie was a beloved high school friend, who encouraged, supported,  and assisted me in my early growth in the Lord Jesus Christ.  I accepted the Lord at the age of 16, my Junior year in high school.  Margie directed me to join Youth For Christ, which was the exciting and helpful organization for young Christians in our day.  Those were the challenging 60's.  Their slogan was: "Saturday Night Spent Right is Spent at Youth For Christ."  I never missed a meeting.  She also invited me to attend a prayer group at school, where we met over the lunch hour, to pray for our fellow students and one another.  She invited me into her home to enjoy wonderful meals with her amazing parents, who also encouraged me.  I loved sitting around their piano, and singing Christian music.  Margie also came to my church and often sang  a solo for our Sunday morning service. She had a voice like an angel.  I have so much gratitude in my heart for a dear friend who helped me grow in the Lord Jesus Christ.  She invited me to attend Cascade College, where she met and married her soul mate, Bob Hall.  I loved my time at Cascade, and especially looked forward to seeing Margie's friendly and sweet face when we would meet in the hall or attend a class together.  My dear friend helped me so much in my early growth and experiences as a baby Christian from a non-Christian background.  I had a great deal of zeal for my Lord, and went on to marry a Conservative Baptist Minister, and together we have shared 53 years together in the service of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Choosing to follow Christ and to take Him as my Savior was the best decision I have made in life.  I have often thanked my God for bringing Margie to me as a friend, encourager, and mentor.  I have held her friendship very close in my heart, and am so thankful we had a chance to catch up with each other shortly before the Lord took her home.   Margie was one of the precious "treasures" in my life.
