Vernon Gilbert, Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto, died Tuesday, October 4, 2016 of complications related to pneumonia, in his 90th year. Born in Sydney, NSW to Alan and May Gilbert on September 5, 1927, Vern was predeceased by his parents, infant sister Shirley and infant granddaughter Isabeau. He is survived by his wife Eleanor, daughters Margaret Roberts and Catherine Gilbert, grandchildren Megann Roberts, Quinlin and Grace Gilbert-Walters, sister Patricia Douglass (Newcastle, NSW) and many family members throughout Australia. Vern attended school in Sydney and after teaching briefly in Australia went globetrotting in 1952, eventually winding up in Hamilton, ON. He met Eleanor in 1954 in Toronto, and they married in 1955. After attending Ontario College of Education, Vern taught at Oakwood C.I. in Toronto. He moved his young family to Australia for a teaching job, returning to Toronto in 1960. Vern joined the staff of Newtonbrook Secondary School when it opened in 1964 as head of mathematics, later becoming vice-principal and then principal (1967-69) there. While principal, he helped introduce the credit system to Ontario schools. Vern obtained his M.Ed. (Toronto) in 1968 and joined the Faculty of Education, University of Toronto in 1969. He was awarded his Ph.D. in 1979 (University of Bristol). Always interested and involved in improving community life, Vern served as president of the Horseshoe Lake Property Owners’ Association for eleven years, was church warden of St. George on Yonge, Willowdale, was an executive member of the Willowdale PC association, and served as a member of the North York Public Library Board and the North York Board of Health. He travelled extensively with Eleanor and they enjoyed many of our Canadian winters in Australia, returning to Canada in time to prepare for long summer seasons at their cottage near Minden. He enjoyed life, his family and friends. Funeral eucharist will be held at St. George on Yonge Anglican Church (5350 Yonge Street, Toronto) at 11 am on Saturday, October 8, 2016 with refreshments to follow.
