Very sad to hear of Tyrone’s passing . Tyrone was a customer of Gerdau Oshawa for many years and will be deeply missed by all of our staff . Our sincerest condolences to Tyrone’s family and loved ones.

Memories .../Part 6 - Final

After a fair number of years passing, now internet existed and social media. On a few occasions I tried to search Tyrone out but to no avail. So with periodic searches, I eventually found Neil online and reached out to find Tyrone was living in Oshawa and it just so happened, I was also in Oshawa. I drove by the Oshawa house a couple of times and nobody was home. Then one day I knocked and mom answered the door. At first she didn’t recognize me but as soon as I said its Ernie she remembered me right away. Her and I chatted for a little bit they she called for Tyrone, we were in touch again. So periodic visits would happen but mostly around January/February. Tyrones birthday is on Jan 14 which is the same day as my dads, mine is on the 30th. Early February 2021, with Covid interfering with social visits we talked on the phone which would be the last time.

Rest In Peace my 48 year friend. You are remembered!

So fast forward a few more years, I called and said I was coming over to which he responded I’ll have to give you directions, they moved again. Tyrone and family moved somewhere in the Eglinton/Brimley area. I remember Tyrone, Tony and I playing Risk in the basement of the new house. We did this a few times and then found ourselves busy with our lives again and a few years went by. So I called one day to find the number wasn’t good anymore and they had moved again. I had also moved and married. This time with no internet or cell phones yet we had lost touch.

Forward a couple more years Tyrone, Gerard and I had our own vehicles and we were working and growing into adults although there may have been some moments here and there where you may want to question that. Tyrone excelled at making things whether it be woodworking, machine shop electrical etc. The Police was one of Tyrones favourite bands and he certainly had a way with the ladies. Later, Tyrone introduced me to a “beverage and dance establishment” by the name of Caddy’s. Aside from Tyrone’s parents, he always looked up to Tony and Antonia and it was obvious.

In 1975 I moved on to Cardinals Drum and Bugle Corps following Chris Douglas and family. In 1976 Steve McKay joined the Corps and we all became friends which also included Paul Collins (at that time also known as spike) and a few others. Steve lived at Victoria Park/Lawrence, so we were really spread across Scarborough from one end to the other. Still didn’t stop us all from getting together. Tyrone did come out to Cardinals but his true love was Soccer. By 1976 Gerard and I had our drivers licenses and Tyrone a year later as he was a year younger. I remember Tyrone and I up at Steves place which was a regular hangout listening to records with the gang. Tyrone would ask to play School by Supertramp although he called it “the Supertramp song with the skip in it” (self explanatory).

After grade school was completed the Pereira family moved to Warden Ave down by Kingston Rd. The distance didn’t affect the relationship any as we were all living on our 10 speed bikes and thought nothing of riding across Scarborough back and forth  multiple times a day to each others houses. So now we were all in different high schools, Gerard and I at Cardinal Newman and Tyrone at Birchmount Collegiate. The first band I saw live was Foot In Cold Water (song - In the Morning Light) with Tyrone at Birchmount Collegiate. Every time I hear the song Kodachrome by Paul Simon it reminds me of Warden Ave.

Memories of Tyrone : Part 1

I first met Tyrone in September of 1973 at St Thomas More Catholic School on Ellesmere just east of Markham Rd. By springtime, Gerard O’Neil, Tyrone, Chris Douglas and Trever Ferreira and I were school chums.Tyrone was the Soccer player of our group and lived over by the Real McCoy. Summer of 1973 Gerard introduced me to the East Scarborough Kinsmen Drum and Bugle Corps. Insert Neil Wells (aka future husband of Tyrones sister Antonia) around this spot on the timeline. I can’t remember how I was introduced to Neil but he also ended up in Drum Corps with us. Neil also lived by The Real McCoy. I remember Tyrone and I in Neils apartment listening to Nazareth and Aerosmith. That is where Neil introduced us to the fine art of throwing snowballs at the passing TTC buses, yup, great times.
