She is predeceased by her parents, Alexander Downey and Johanna Monica Mc Goldrick,
her sisters Ida Mae Ball and Rita MacWhirter, and her brothers Gerald and Donald Downey.
Sister Monica will be dearly missed by Frank Ball, her brother in-law,
and her many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as by her Sisters in Community. Sister Monica entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 8, 1938. She made her first profession in 1941 and her final profession in 1944. Sister Monica was engaged in the Education Ministry for many years. She began teaching in elementary schools in Toronto. In 1951, she moved to St. Catharines and taught Home Economics.
Sister Monica continued to display her gifts and talents as she educated many young women in Home Economics both at St. Joseph's College School, and St. Joseph's Morrow Park. Sister Monica was missioned to St. Joseph's Residence in Winnipeg for ten years, where she was a very gracious Receptionist to all who came to her for assistance. Sister Monica moved to Terrace, B.C. and was engaged in Pastoral Ministry.
Upon returning to Ontario, Sister Monica ministered in hospitality and food preparation at Invermara, the vacation house of the Sisters. In recent years Sister Monica was very dedicated to the needs of the poor and was engaged in Congregational Ministry assisting at St. Joseph's Centre, Morrow Park, and St. Joseph's Residence at 2 O' Connor. Visitation will take place at St. Joseph's Residence, 2 O'Connor Drive, Toronto, on Sunday, January 18, 2015 from 3:30 p.m. with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel at 2 O' Connor Drive.
