Captain Margaret (Peggy) Lillian Stewart Milne, CD, BA born 6 February 1925 to Dr. Gilbert Oren Stewart and Edna Clarke Stewart in Arnprior Ontario, died peacefully of natural causes on 24 April 2023 at 98. Peggy served in the Canadian Army in WW2 (W-21219), and continued service after the War in the Militia, serving with the Intelligence Company, the Toronto Service Battalion, and on Staff, rising to WO2, then Commissioned for merit, when Women Officers were rare indeed.
After University, Peggy was a respected Civil Servant with the MTO in Toronto. Predeceased by her beloved husband Edward Milne, himself a wartime Infantry Officer who shared her interest Veterans welfare. After Edwards’s death, Peggy honoured Edward’s wishes that his Father’s WW1 medals be donated to a military Museum. Captain Edward Milne (senior) was on of Canada’s 4 years in the trenches soldiers who earned Mention-in-Dispatches, the Distinguished Conduct Medal twice, and a Military Cross, was wounded at least 5 times, and died at sea when his Hospital Ship was torpedoed by a U-Boat. Those Milne medals are now with the Calgary Highlanders Museum.
