Jack Walker passed away peacefully at home on April 8, 2021. He served his country as a World War II Navy veteran. He was a proud Detective and Captain of the Thomasville Police Force for 32 years. His time on the police force included being the first to learn how to fingerprint through the FBI. ‘Captain Walker’ also gave back to his community through his investment in young men as a Boy Scout Master. This investment resulted in supporting many to become Eagle Scouts and ultimately helped to shape upstanding young men. Not one to sit still, after retirement Jack worked at PPG as a private security officer as well as volunteered his time at the hospital.
Jack had a way with others, giving them a hard time while drawing them into a relationship. While he devoted his life to his family, work, and serving the community, he was also certain to experience the world. He and his beloved wife loved to travel, including celebrating their anniversary in Hawaii, cruising to Alaska, and many trips exploring the United States.
The proudest title Jack ever had was that of ‘Poppaw.’ He welcomed his grandchildren into his home with their favorite treats, took them on many adventures, and supported them in every endeavor. He loved spending Christmas with his family and spoiling them all. He also enjoyed and cared about all animals as well as spending time with friends.
A Godly man who studied the scripture, Jack was a faithful member and leader within the FUMC in Thomasville. He was a devoted member of Lodge 214 Masons, Chair City Shriners, Shrine Oasis Temple, and Scottish Rite 32nd Degree. In addition, he was named ‘Man of the Year’ by Woodsmen of the World as well as served as personal security for then Gov. Ronald Reagan.
Jack is survived by his wife of 74 years, Kathleen “Kat” Ritchie Walker; daughter, Sherri (Lee) Bowman of Thomasville; granddaughters Missy (Seth) Washeck of Littleton, CO, Crystal (Josh) Franklin of Debary, FL, Kellee Barbour of Roanoke, VA; brother, Bill Walker of Cambridge, MA; sister-in-law, Billie Ritchie Nance of Thomasville; seven great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Anson, Makenna, Addison, Micah, Wyatt, and Tobiah; as well many special nieces, nephews; faithful friends Ted and Larry, and his beloved cat, Midnight. He was preceded in death by parents, Frank and Odessa; brothers-in-law, Leon Nance and Bert Ritchie. The family is incredibly grateful to Hospice of Davidson County and the VA for his palliative care.
Service will be held on Thursday, April 15, at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church in Thomasville. Graveside service and visitation to immediately follow at Holly Hill Cemetery. The service will also be live-streamed on the Sechrest-Davis’ Facebook page. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Davidson County, The Humane Society of Davidson County, or First United Methodist Church in Thomasville.
