Zachary Alan Doss was born on December 13, 1984, and passed away on March 15, 2018. He is survived by brothers Cody and Jacob, father Alan, and his loving mother Susan, as well as uncle Sydney Bowie, aunt Sharon Bowie, and two cousins in California. He is also survived by his uncle Breon and aunt Sherri and numerous cousins in Texas. Zach was born in Merced, California. He also lived in Mountain View, California; Oahu, Hawaii; Oak Harbor, Washington; Spring, Texas; Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and Los Angeles, California.
Zach was heavily involved in Houston’s theater scene before becoming a writer. He received his BA in theater arts and English from the University of Houston and his MFA in creative writing from the University of Alabama and he was currently a PhD fellow in creative writing and literature at the University of Southern California. He served as editor-in-chief of Gold Line Press and editor of the literary journal Black Warrior Review. He was also a fiction reader at Ploughshares literary journal and a fiction editor at Banango Street. His work is widely published in journals and magazines, and he was currently at work on a book of connected short stories as well as a queer fabulist novel. He was an ardent supporter of feminist and anti-racist causes as well as gay rights. He was a beloved friend, and he will be missed by many.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018, at Forest Park the Woodlands Funeral Home, 18000 I-45 South, The Woodlands, Texas.
