He was raised in the Houston area. He attended Jefferson Davis High School and graduated in 1948. Richard married his high school sweetheart Wessie LaVelle Odom and had a long 55 years of marriage together until her death in 2004. He pursued a long and successful career at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he worked in both the Dallas and Houston areas as well as traveled to numerous locations for the company. Richard retired after 37 years. During the Korean Conflict Richard honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954.
Richard was a loving friend, father, and “DeDe”. Following the death of his first wife, Richard went on to marry his second wife Evelyn whom he spent 15 years together sharing their love of travel and their families. Richard is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Laura; first wife Wessie; brother Charles and his sisters Florence and Mary Ellen.
He is survived by his second wife Evelyn; Sisters, Charlene Osborn and husband Ray, and June McBride and husband David; daughters Sharon Butler and husband Bill, Sherry Wimmer and husband Terry; son Richard Bearden; 6 grandchildren Lindsey and husband Zach, Marissa and husband Carlos, Jessica, Lisa and husband Mike, Chris and wife Lynnsey, and Lory Faught and husband Chris; as well as 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held at 12pm on Monday, August 9th in the Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home 18000 I-45 South The Woodlands, Tx 77384.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org in Richard’s name.
