He was born February 4, 1933 in Quincy, Adams Co., IL, the son of Robert Franklin and Louise Fingerlin Slocum. He married Barbara Jean Simmons, daughter of Robert Earl and Alleen Jackson Simmons, in Quincy, IL on May 31, 1958.
Don graduated from Seymour High School, Payson, IL in 1951; Gem City Business College, Quincy, IL in 1952-1953 and attended the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, IL. He served with the Quartermaster Co., 2nd Infantry Division, US Army, 1953-1954, during the Korean War attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was employed by the U.S. Government for 30 years; U.S. Railway Mail Service, U.S. Post Office Department 1957-1961; U.S. Border Patrol Agent, U.S. Border Patrol, Immigration & Naturalization Service, Del Rio, TX 1961-1962 and in 1962 U.S. Customs Service, Treasury Supervisory Special Agent, St. Louis, MO and Houston, TX. He retired from U.S. Customs in March 1983 and received numerous awards.
Survivors are daughter Tami (Dennis) McNair, Conroe, TX; son Steve (Allison) Slocum, Oak Ridge North, TX and granddaughter Madison Slocum; A brother, Terry (Kathie) Slocum, Libertyville, IL; niece, Angela (Devin) Wight, La Vista, NE; nephew, Aaron (Johnna) Slocum, Ingleside, IL. His wife and parents preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 18 at 11:00 am at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery, The Woodlands, TX. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Jan 17, 4-7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors Project – Precious Moments Chapel Supporting Foundation or the charity of your choice.
