Mary Elizabeth Downing

Mary Elizabeth Downing, loving mother and grandmother, 90, of Terre Haute, died Monday, September 30, 2013 in Union Hospital. She was born on August 4, 1923, in Terre Haute to Margaret Remlinger-Compton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Downing Sr., her mother and step-father, brother, Robert Compton, and grandson, Michael Todd Cherepkai. Survivors include 2 sons, Ralph Downing Jr. and wife Sharon of Terre Haute, Larry Downing and wife Kaye of Covington, GA, one daughter Vicky Downing Cherepkai of Terre Haute, one granddaughter, Terri Fields and husband David, five grandsons, Lyle Cherepkai, David Cherepkai, Ralph Downing III and wife LeAnn of Terre Haute, Jeff Downing and wife Traci, Chris Downing and wife Melissa of Covington, GA, a great granddaughter, Elizabeth Downing of Terre Haute and three great grandsons, Matthew Fields, Nicholas Fields and wife Cherokee, and Zachary Fields, a great granddaughter Skyler Downing and two great grandsons Zachary Downing and Logan Downing of Covington, GA, and one great-great granddaughter, Ava Fields of Terre Haute. Her wonderful sister, Rose Henneman of Terre Haute and several nieces and nephews also survive. Mary was a member and volunteer at Post 346 American Legion for over 40 years, something she enjoyed very much. She was loved and will be missed by all that knew her. Services will be held Thursday, October 3, 2013, at 1:00 pm at Thomas Funeral Home with visitation from 11:00 am until the service time. Officiating will be Reverend Mark Fleschner. Burial will follow at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute.
