John A. Bailey Sr., 85 of Terre Haute, passed away March 20, 2016. He was born on April 1, 1930 to Benjamin and Sarah Bailey. John was a proud member of many organizations throughout his lifetime including the Naval Reserve, Civil Air Patrol, Kiwanis Club, El Shaddai Emmaus of Indiana, and the VCTA where he acted as the Vice President. When not active in organizations, John loved to volunteer at the Union Hospital, bowl, garden, go mushroom and deer hunting, and also enjoyed flying. He loved education only to graduate from Indiana State University and DePauw University to go on to live a lifetime full of teaching. He taught at Rio Grande and Collett School before retiring.
John is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughters, Nancy Kay (Don) Johnson and J. Anna Whitman; sons, John A. (Sherry) Bailey Jr. and Doug (Mitzi) Bailey; brothers-in-law, Archie Goodwin and Jerry Reel; sisters-in-law, Cathy Bailey and Anita Oswald; grandchildren, Amy Sparks, Paul Cornwell, Erin Edington, Andrea Johnson, Marie Knifley, and Jerry McKinney; thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, several nieces and nephew.
John is preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.
A service will be held in John’s honor at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home at 1:30 PM on Thursday, March 24, 2016 with a visitation prior from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Rick Swan will be officiating. John will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to American Heart Association and the Kidney Foundation.
