James L. Young (JL), age 79, of Temple, Texas passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at home in Temple. After years of struggling, he succumbed to effects of agent orange exposure during his time in Vietnam. He was born on August 5, 1944 in Bossier, Louisiana the son of Guy and Idonia (Coker) Young.
James lived a full life. He served in the United States Army during Vietnam. After the war, he worked as a machinist, then joined the Shreveport Fire Department (La). He retired as a Battalion Chief after 30 years of public service. After retirement James founded the South Murvaul water Supply (TX) and served as its President and Operator for eight years.
James met the love of his life, Glenda, while stationed at Fort Hood (TX). They enjoyed 55 years of marriage. When he passed on Sunday, it was in the arms of his wife. His greatest joy was his kids and grandkids. He was quick to tell you they are “smart” “athletic” and “pretty”.
James was an avid outdoorsman, a friend to many, and a huge fan of LSU. He was a fixer of all things...or most things. He loved the Lord and was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by his wife Glenda of Temple, daughter Jamie Smith and husband Richard of Shreveport, LA, sons, Gary Young and wife Cori of Lubbock, TX, and Rodney Young of Anacoco, LA, 5 grandchildren, Andrew Smith and wife Kristen, Halie Booker and husband Brandon, Justin Smith and wife Elizabeth, Katie Young, and Cooper James Young, 7 great-grandchildren, Annilyn Booker, Reed Smith, Elijah Booker, Whitlynn Smith, Aubree Smith, Sawyer James Smith, and Samuel Booker. James is also survived by a brother Jerry Young and wife Stacey of Eros, LA and a sister Patricia Scott and husband Tony of Rockwall, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Idonia Young, his four brothers, Billie Young, Donnie Young, Ronnie Young, and Bob Young. His two sisters, Audrey Young and Janet Stevenson.
A memorial visitation will take place on Thursday, July 25, 2024 from 1:00pm until the time of service at 2:00pm at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home 3110 Airport Rd. Temple, Texas 76504.
