Donnell Revis Dixon of Temple, TX passed away on September 23, 2024 in at his residence in Temple, TX. Donnell was born on January 22, 1923 in Temple, TX to Charles F. Dixon and Flossie Rainwater Dixon. He was a 1941 graduate of Troy High School and worked as a certified dental technician for 47 years with both a local dentist and the Temple Dental Laboratory. For the last 26 years of his career, Donnell worked in Civil Service with the U.S. Army at both Fort Polk and Fort Hood, where he received many commendations and service awards in the dental laboratory field. At the time of his death, Donnell was 101 years of age.
Donnell married Opal LaVerne Mayes in 1947 in Temple, TX. The couple raised two daughters, Judy Ann Lawhorn of Temple and Donna Sue Martin of McGregor. Donnell was quite a baseball player and avid sports fan. He was a die-hard Temple Wildcat fan and spent many years following his grandsons’ athletic careers on the Wildcat football and baseball teams. His support continued to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and University of Texas at Arlington, where two of his grandsons played collegiate baseball. He was a regular viewer of the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros. Donnell, better known as Granddaddy by his grandsons and great-grandchildren, was well-known for his firm handshake and the way he could tell a story. He took great pride in his yard work, his wellness, and his family. Throughout his life, Donnell enjoyed connecting with friends from the Troy and Temple communities and attended many reunions and gatherings. He was a long-time member of the First Methodist Church in Temple, as well as Chapter 12 Mended Hearts of Temple.
Donnell was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Flossie Dixon, his wife, Opal Mayes Dixon, and his daughter, Judy Ann Lawhorn.
He is survived by his daughter, Donna Sue Martin (husband Billy Martin) of McGregor, TX, son-in-law Vernon Lawhorn of Temple, TX, his five grandsons: Chad Martin (wife Jennifer Martin) of Brock, TX, Craig Martin (wife Susan Martin) of Magnolia, TX, Corey Martin of McGregor, TX, Kevin Lawhorn of Takoma Park, MD, and Eric Lawhorn of Bolivia, and his four great-grandchildren: Ali and Hunter Martin of Brock, TX, and Emily and Brewer Martin of Magnolia, TX.
