Bettye was born on September 14, 1929 in Heidenheimer, Texas to Vera Dell Sisco and Walter Meacham Sisco. After graduating from Temple High School in 1948, she attended Temple Junior College and Abilene Christian College. In 1950, she married the love of her life, Dr. A.E. “Wiedie” Wiedeman—a beloved Temple physician. Bettye and Wiedie worked side by side in his medical practice until his death in 1976, and Bettye continued to care for those around her for the rest of her life. In recognition of Bettye’s many years of community service, she was honored with a commission from Governor Greg Abbott as a Yellow Rose of Texas shortly before her 94th birthday.
A lifelong Temple resident, Bettye was known for her generosity, her grace, and her impeccable sense of style. But her family and friends will also remember her as a fiercely loyal confidante. She listened with genuine interest and without judgment. She bore others’ pains, shared their sorrows, celebrated their accomplishments, and reveled in their joy. Conversations with Bettye had healing power, dosed liberally with empathy and unconditional love and sparingly with advice.
Bettye was a devoted Christian and a long-time member of the Northside Church of Christ in Temple. She exemplified the Apostle Paul’s words in Galations 6:9: “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Throughout her life, Bettye embraced doing good and was happiest when giving of herself in the service of others. Surely, she now is reaping her reward in Heaven.
Bettye is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sisters, Lavinia Mae Young of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and Ruby Lee Mykleby of Temple. She is survived by her nephew Perry Mykleby (Jane) of Roswell, Georgia, Nissa Mykleby Dunn (Chris) of San Antonio, and a host of loving friends who she considered to be part of her family.
