Thomas "Tom" James Riley

Thomas "Tom" James Riley, of Temple Terrace, Florida passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at the James A Haley Veterans Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Lois. And by his four children, Sean Riley, Julie Laznick, Colleen Musson, and a daughter preceded in death, Doreen Hanscom. Sons-in-law, Kory, Scotty, and David. Six grandchildren, Casee, Zachary, Michael, Alex, Stevie, Gabriel (who's middle name is Thomas) and a great granddaughter Cora-Lee. Tom is also survived by his sister, Betsy, and preceded in death, a sister, Peggy, Several nieces and nephews, sister-in-law June, and brothers in Lloyd and Russell.

He was born to the late John J. Riley and Margaret (McDonough) Riley and lived in Brookline, MA. until the age of 15 when the family moved to Florida.

Tom attended Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport, Florida. There he discovered that his physical strength allowed him to excel in wrestling and won several championships during his years in school. In 1963, he joined the Navy right after graduation, during the Vietnam war. He was an aviation Machinist Mate, and then became Chief Petty Officer. He loved the Navy and the travel to many different countries he visited or was stationed at. He was honorably discharged in 1983.

In 1985, he met Lois. They were smitten and fell in love, and were married March 29, 1986. Tom was going to school to become a Physical Therapist Assistant, where he worked right up until retirement in 2012. On March 29th Nine years ago, on their 25th wedding anniversary, they renewed their vows and had a lovely ceremony at the Gazebo and a reception at Woodmont Clubhouse in Temple Terrace, joined by family and a lot of great friends.

In 2010, Tom and Lois finally got to take their long awaited trip to Ireland, where they searched for any of Toms distant relatives. They kissed the Blarney Stone, and spent one night in a castle. Most of their lodging was in lovely Bed and Breakfasts. The trip was amazing for both of them. The countryside was beautiful.

Tom loved to read and was knowledgeable in many areas. He taught his son Sean, to fish early in life. He was best known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He will be sorely missed by All.

A celebration of life service for "Tom" will be held Saturday, September 19, 2020 starting at 1:00 PM at the Belmont Baptist Church, 7830 N. 56th Street, Tampa, FL 33617. Masks will be required.
