Martha Joyce Schonerstedt was born on May 7, 1935 in Taylor, Texas to William and Martha Estelle Carlson Schonerstedt. She was a granddaughter to Carl Arthur and Lillie Estelle Johnson Carlson. who were very active in the her life. She has an older sister, Elizabeth Waneen Tulloch and a younger brother, William Arthur Schonerstedt. Martha Joyce passed from this life on October 21, 2019, after ending a battle with dementia.
She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and brother. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Waneen Tulloch, Sheila Schonerstedt, as well as by nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces.
Martha Joyce had an adventurous spirit and was an accomplished student at Taylor High School. She was nominated by her peers as a person Most Likely to Succeed. MJ loved Taylor and was a lifelong member of the Hutto Lutheran Church. Martha Joyce was employed as a telephone operator by Southwestern Bell Telephone, later becoming AT&T. After 39 years of faithful service, she retired in 1993.
Martha Joyce is described as having the heart of Jesus. She made friends where ever she went and though she did not have a driver’s license, she traveled the country with the assistance of friends, family, and public transportation. She had a giving heart and spent countless hours in hospitals, nursing homes, and elsewhere tending to those in need. She broke though secret service lines to obtain pictures of Presidents as well as breaking through security lines to gain photos or kisses from celebrities. Martha Joyce lived life with vigor and loved to be with, entertain, and encourage those around her. She will be sorely missed by those of us who knew and loved her.
