Bill was born in Brooklyn, New York to John and Marie Meehan on February 11,1955. He attended St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn, and was a 1973 graduate of Bishop Ford High School. He earned his Associate Degree from Hillsborough Community College before attending the University of South Florida, where he excelled pursuing a degree in political science. He married Frances Carol Matera on June 17, 1983 in North Belmore, New York.
Bill worked for the Wall Street brokerage firm A.G. Becker from 1977 through 1984 as a Commodities broker and floor manager. He initiated the firm’s New York Futures Exchange (NYFE) operations. In 1984 he went to work for John Kelley and Company where he was instrumental in the firm becoming the leading
brokerage operation on the NYFE. Bill held Series 6 and Series 23 Securities Licenses. In 1987 he was awarded a seat on the floor of the New York Futures Exchange where he traded stock index futures and commodities.
After moving with his family to Florida in 1990, he became a Series 7 licensed stock broker, owned his own travel agency, and became a licensed mortgage broker. In 2005, he entered management at Walgreens where he worked for 11 years as a beloved member of leadership until his retirement in 2016.
Bill was known for his witty sense of humor and his ability to entertain the crowd. Bill had a passion for cooking for his family and guests, specializing in elaborate dishes and large gatherings. He had a keen understanding and passion for discussing politics. Bill devoted his retirement to traveling the world with his wife and entertaining his granddaughter, Alana. He was also anxiously awaiting the birth of his second granddaughter.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents John (Jack) and Marie Meehan, father-in-law Aniello (Nick) Matera, mother-in law Carolyn (Cary) Matera, brothers John, James and Kevin Meehan, sister Kathleen Connelly, brothers-in-law John and Ralph Matera, Maurice Connelly, sister-in-law Ann O’Connell, and loyal companions Princess and Buddy.
Bill is survived by his wife Frances (Matera) Meehan, his son Keith (wife Eileen), his daughter Caroline (fiancé Matthew Clark), his sister Marie Meehan, and granddaughter Alana. He is also survived by in-laws Lucille McLaughlin (husband Artie), Janice Meehan, Bill O’Connell, Sandy Meehan, Jennie Matera, Kathy Matera, numerous nieces and nephews, and grand-dog Leo.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 18th, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Blount & Curry Funeral Home (3207 W Bearss Ave, Tampa, FL 33618). A socially-distanced funeral mass will be held on Saturday, December 19th, 2020 at 2:00 PM at St. Paul Catholic Church (12708 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, FL 33618).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s name to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The Meehan family would like to extend our sincere thanks to Drs. Kahan, Creelan, and Sokol, as well as all the doctors, pharmacists, nurses and staff at Tampa General Hospital, Moffitt Cancer Center, and Suncoast Hospice.
