William Buren Hill “Bill” died peacefully with his family at his side on July 29, 2021. He was born on October 11, 1931 in Cliffside, North Carolina to Jacob Pinckney Hill and Louise Fowler Hill. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a full academic scholarship, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1953. He married his first wife, Jo Ellen Taylor in 1961 and they had two children: William Buren Hill, Jr. born in 1964 and Melinda Ellen Hill born in 1966. Joellen died tragically in 1972. Bill raised his children as a single parent, attending many football and basketball ball games as well as tennis and horseback riding lessons. In 2010, he married Alice Grandoff Hill. Bill had traveled the world in his career with Price Waterhouse. He loved tennis, reading, crossword puzzles, traveling and cooking with his wife Alice, and music, especially jazz. He volunteered for over 10 years with the Hillsborough Literacy Council, teaching adults to read. He received the Literacy Council’s volunteer of the year award in 2016. He is survived by his wife Alice; sister, Susan Jolley (Max); daughter, Melinda Salmon (John) and his son Bill Hill,Jr (Jennifer) and 5 grandchildren.
