Theodore (Ted) Woloson, passed away peacefully February 3, 2017 at his home in Tampa Florida at the age of 94. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Grace (94), his son John and wife Rosa, and daughters Jan, Joyce, Judy, and her husband John Anderson. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, one great grandchild, 5 great step-grandchildren and one great-great step-grandchild.
Ted was born in Detroit, Michigan, December 15, 1922 to Xenia Antoshek Woloson and John Theodore Woloson. He graduated from Detroit’s Wayne State University in 1944, and in 1950 received a master’s degree in Business Administration- Personnel Management. He served in the Air Force during World War II as a navigator/bombardier, and reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, retiring from the Air Force Reserves in 1972.
Ted had a distinguished 38-year career in University Human Resource Management, starting with Wayne State University in 1948, and including positions with University of Dayton, University of South Florida, and St Louis University. He was a longtime member of the College and University Personnel Association, serving as CUPA president in 1975 and 1976.
After retiring in 1986, for 10 years Ted, with wife Mary Grace, volunteered for the American Red Cross in Tampa, providing relief services during Hurricane Andrew, the Louisiana Floods, Tropical Storm Josephine, and Hurricane George. They also volunteered for over 20 years as ushers at Tampa’s Straz Performing Arts Center.
Ted loved to travel. He and Mary Grace visited 50 states, China, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Africa, Egypt, and several European countries. Together they also took 26 cruises.
Ted was an avid golfer, starting as a caddie with his brother Steve in 1936 at Plum Hollow Country Club in Detroit. He continued golfing well into his 80’s, and was a member of Northdale Country Club of Tampa.
Ted is a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Tampa Florida, where services will be held on Saturday, February 11. Visitation is at 9:00 AM and Mass is at 10:00 AM, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
