Michael Patrick Burnell, 52, transitioned at 7:31 am, December 11, 2022, with his family by his side in Tampa, Florida. A native of the state of Maine, Michael was born to Edward and Susan Burnell. He grew up in Portland, Maine and graduated from Deering High School in 1989. Michael later attended Florida Metropolitan University, Orlando.
Mike was a boxing enthusiast his whole life, and was an amateur boxer in New England as a young man. Known for his exceptionally quick wit and sense of humor, Mike also performed stand-up Comedy, writing his own material.
His keen sense of Adventure brought him to Florida, where he spent the second half of his life. Mike built a career in services to the legal industry in Orlando and Tampa. He was a lifelong fan of the New England Patriots team and came to love the Tampa Bay Buccanneers in his adopted state. Mike wrote articles for Round by Round boxing blog online and was very well versed in all matters of the sport. He also enjoyed fishing, a hobby he embraced as a boy.
He was a proud American and spoke fondly of his Irish heritage. He loved GOD. Of all Mike’s interests and talents, however, there was one role he treasured above all else: the role of dad to his son, Alejadro. Mike was tremendously proud of Adro, and his son was his world. When he wasn’t at work, Mike was a regular fixture at Skatepark of Tampa (SPoT) for many years, supporting his son’s advancement skateboarding and traveling with him to competitions throughout the US.
Michael will be remembered for his kindness and generosity, his sense of humor, and his loyalty. He had a way of making people feel at ease and was always quick with a joke. Mike loved and treasured his family and friends and had a soft spot for animals. He leaves behind many broken hearts in those who knew him and will always be remembered with love.
Michael is survived by his son, Alejandro Burnell and his girlfriend Megan Terrell of Woodland Hills California; his parents Edward and Susan Burnell of Tampa; his sister Elizabeth and husband Ainsley Gomes of the UK; his best friend, Alan Scott Robinson, Texas; his former wife, Pilar DeLeon Urbaez of Tampa; his stepson Mickey Iglasias of Miami; and many loving extended family and friends. He also leaves behind a special love, Julia Abalos of Manila, Phillipines.
