Lionel Vasquez, 94, entered the gates of heaven on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Born in Key West, Florida. The 11th of 14 siblings. Lionel spent his childhood in Tampa prior to moving to New York at age 15. At 21 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served 3 years as a Cannoneer with the 117th Field Artillery Battalion (New Guinea South Philippines {liberation}). Before retiring, he worked at Ryder Truck Lines for 24 years and was an active member of the American Legion (Post 248) for 40 years and a member of the Teamsters Union (Local 79). He was preceded in death by wife Henrietta, whom he was blessed to share 56½ years with. He is survived by Daughters; Nydia Lounders and Aileen Escribano (Joe), Granddaughters; Desiree Works (Scott), Nicole Casey, Raquel Coryer (Rob), and Natalie Scheer (Chuck), Great-Grandchildren; Jake and Ryan Works, Nicholas Karlson, Payton and Jarrett Sheer, Brooke Casey, and Zoe Coryer, Brother; Robert, beloved Yorkie; Sophia, and many nephews and nieces.
He’ll be remembered for his generosity, kind heart, wit, and always responding to the question of how he was feeling with the words, “Just like an 18-year-old boy”. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. (visitation at 1:00 p.m.) at The Garden of Memories Chapel, 4207 E. Lake Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33610.
