John (called Jack by everyone who knew him) was born Haverhill, MA, to John J. Ambrose and Mary J. Kelly Ambrose on Nov 8th, 1937. He attended Saint James HS in Haverhill, and graduated from the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in Boston, MA, and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Suffolk University. He married Ann Laydon Lewis (nee Nancy Wallace) on July 27, 1970 in Boston, MA.
John worked for the City of Tampa for 18 years, first as a Budget Analyst for the Revenue and Finance Department of the City of Tampa, FL, and then as the Administrative Services Manager in the Human Resources Department, managing the Risk Management, Claims and Safety Divisions. Before moving from New York to Florida in 1980, John worked for the Sperry & Hutchinson Company.
John was a Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Reserves during the time of the Vietnam war.
As a family man, John was loved by his large extended family. He traveled with his sisters and their spouses. His dry wit, sense of humor and stories brought a smile to his nieces and nephew’s faces. As a husband, John loved his wife Nancy of 37 years, and took care of her in her time of need. As a step-father and grandfather, John was generous to a fault. He looked forward to daily texts and updates from his grandson Luke, who carries on John’s family name.
As a neighbor, John liked his privacy, but was always there to watch out for his neighbors and their kids. Those who met John got an immediate sense of who he was, and got to share his love of sports (or his ridicule - should you be unfortunate to root for the opposing team!)
A description of John would not be complete without acknowledging his obsession with any sport team from Boston. A die-hard hockey, football and baseball fan, his TV was tuned into every game, and his house is filled with Boston sports memorabilia. His sister Pat, who lives in MA, would text him scores and updates of his team’s progress.
John is preceded in death by his wife Nancy, and his brother-in-law Frank Miller.
John is survived by his step-daughter Lynn Lewis and her husband Nick Moramarco, grandson Luke Ambrose Moramarco; sisters Pat Miller and Jean Wilson and her husband Ed Wilson; nieces Katie Hill and her husband Terry; Karen Carioscia and her husband Mike; Laurie Inglese and husband Ralph Inglese, Tara Miller and her husband Carter Dyal, Su-Su Miller; nephews Paul Miller, Tim Miller, Mark Miller; and great-nieces and great-nephews Katie, Ben and Chris Inglese; Molly and Conor Miller; Griffin and Declan Dyal; Laura, Ryan, Johnny and Kevin Hill; and Jenna and Matthew Carioscia.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 23rd, at 11:00 am at Blount and Curry Funeral Home, 3207 W Bearss Ave, Tampa, FL.
Memorials may be given to St Jude’s Hospital for children, John’s favorite charity.
The family of John J. Ambrose Jr. wishes to extend their sincere thanks to his friends Therese, Inez and Cindy, who were very kind to him and helped John in his time of need; the Melech Hospice House, St Joseph’s North Hospital; the hospital nurses and doctors who cared for him the last couple of weeks; and his PCP and Cardiologist who have cared for him for 30 years.
