Born in 1937, Joan was a native and lifelong resident of Tampa and the daughter of the late Veola Johnson Hedrick and Jones Tilden Hedrick. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 55 years, Howell McKay, and by her sister and brother-in-law, Martha Craig and Ed Hardman. She attended Wilson Junior High School, Plant High School, Florida State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority.
In addition to her love for her family, Joan had an equal love for her community that she felt so blessed to be a part of. She was a dedicated driver for Meals on Wheels for nearly 30 years and served as President of the Board of Directors for 3 years. Her other community board involvements included The United Way of Tampa, The Home Association, H.B. Plant Museum Society, The Chiselers and the Junior League of Tampa from whom she received the Sustainer of the Year Award. She was a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where she especially treasured her involvement with the altar and flower guilds. Her love of nature and God’s creations was expressed in the flowers she arranged for the altars and in the restoration of the church’s Chapel of the Resurrection.
Joan is survived by her children, son John Howell McKay (Trish) and daughter Hedy McKay Bever (Jay), granddaughters McKay Bever Hubbell (Kenny) and Jamie McKay Bogdan (Andrew), great-grandson Bennett Reid Hubbell, several beloved nieces and nephews and her loving dog Weezie.
Joan cherished her faith, family and friends. All were deeply important to her and meaningful throughout her life, growing dearer to her with each passing year. She was always so warm and welcoming and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
