James “Jim” C. Zink, age 93, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2024, in Lutz, FL. He was born on Nov. 25, 1930 in Independence, Missouri to the late Henry and Helen (Cisne) Zink. In 1933, the family moved to Tampa, FL and Jim attended schools in Tampa, graduating from Jefferson High School in 1949. While attending automotive classes in Independence, MO, he married Frances “Rooney” Hyder in December 1949.
In the Fall of 1950, the couple returned to Tampa and in 1952, Jim joined the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After attending classes in Santa Maria, CA, he was stationed at Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois, as a jet engine instructor.
On the G.I. Bill, Jim attended Tampa University and then graduated with an Associate in Arts at Hillsborough Community College. On Feb. 20, 1956, he began working at Tampa Electric Co. and continued his education. As a relay specialist, he felt that it was the best job in the company, retiring in 1994 with 40 years of service.
Jim’s talent in mechanics and building was evident from an early age and he rebuilt various types of vehicles over the years. While he was still working, he and Rooney built their dream home in Lutz on their time off work.
Jim is survived by his wife of 74 years, son Dr. James L. Zink (Bonnie) of Sylva, NC, daughter Lori D. Smith (Gary), grandsons: J. David Zink (Angela), Michael Smith and Craig Smith (Lauren), great-grandchildren: Haley (Madison) Castleberry, Karly Zink, Zion Briones, Lucas Smith, Leland Smith, Leighla Smith, Asher Smith and Sophie Smith, great-great-grandchild: Isabella Castleberry; and sister: Joann Ramlow.
Jim was a devoted Christian and at one time, was an elder at Bayshore Methodist Church. When he moved to Lutz, he attended Idlewild Baptist Church and was a member of the Berean Bible Class.
A Celebration of Jim Zink's Life will be held July 6, 2024 at 10:00 AM with the visitation at 9:00 AM.
