DEER, Harriet Ann, 93, of Temple Terrace, died December 29, 2022. Born July 15, 1929 in Salem OH to James and Martha Hall, she was raised in Van Wert, OH, where she volunteered as a Candy Striper during WWII and was valedictorian of her high school class. She earned a BA in English Literature from the College of Wooster and graduate degrees in English Literature and Drama from University of Minnesota. Harriet had a long, accomplished career teaching Shakespeare, modern drama, popular culture, and film, mostly as Professor at the University of South Florida. She and her late husband, Irving, authored four books, including The Popular Arts, an early seminal textbook on its subject. As a leader in the field of Popular Culture studies, she served as vice president for the Popular Culture Association, and worked actively in leadership for the Modern Language Association. She was most known as a passionate and accessible teacher who made complex ideas understandable. After retirement, she continued to teach other retirees and loved providing lectures as part of classic film programs at the Tampa Theatre and USF’s OLLI program. She was also devoted to and served as a guiding light for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom adored her. She is survived by her children, Daniel, Jonathan (Laurie), Joseph (Caitlin) and Helen (Mitchell), as well as grandchildren, Monique, Janecka, Alicia, Alexander, Leonard, Carter, and August, and great-grandchildren Jizelle, Jonas, and Angelina. Harriet is much beloved and will be greatly missed. Services will be Monday, January 2nd. Visitation - 10am, Service - 11am with interment follow at Blount & Curry, 4207 E. Lake Ave, Tampa 33610.
