A giant among men passed away early Sunday, Oct 9, his fading moments fittingly heralded by the pre-dawn crowing of a mournful rooster. Eduardo Valdes—husband, father, grandfather, brother, tio, papa, ‘buelo, dada, mentor and friend—drifted away with his wife at his side, closing the final chapter in his earthly life. He lived surrounded by life and laughter, by a large and caring extended family that he nurtured and anchored, and that showered him with their affection and attention. He came from Cuba as a young man with empty pockets but a huge heart. He worked hard and built a prosperous life, always centered on family. He took great pride in the many achievements of all the children who grew into men and women in his shadow, and he modeled for them what life should be: a joyful celebration of the things that matter. Always quick to smile, laugh, joke or be part of an occasional prank, he was generous with all things. He was a masterful cook, and all were always invited to take a place at his table. His “Noche Buena” celebrations were a thing of legend, and he was happiest surrounded by a home packed with family and friends, music, food, drink, dominoes, cigars, hugs and chatter, and the love that bound it all together. His legacy will endure in the countless lives he touched, in the people he inspired who will keep his name and his memory alive. He was a lion and a patriarch. He will be missed.
