After World War II broke out her family moved to Tampa as her father came to work in the ship yard as a carpenter. Doris was 8 years old. They found Palm Ave. Baptist Church as their home and made many lifelong friends. It was where Doris found the Lord and a wonderful place to grow spiritually during her teen years.
After graduating from Hillsborough High School, Doris then graduated from Mars Hill College in North Carolina. Upon graduation she became the church secretary at Seminole Heights Baptist Church. It was then she met and fell in love with Jerry the love of her life. They married in the church on November 30, 1956. Six months later Jerry was drafted in the Army and sent to Heidelberg, Germany. Doris joined him and they toured many European countries. After 2 years they brought home a precious 3 month old little German souvenir Kendra Diane.
Jerry returned to his job at the Tampa Tribune. Four years later the family was blessed with a special little baby boy, Stephen Ray. When Stephen was 12 years old life took a sudden change when he was diagnosed with Leukemia. He received his treatments at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. Many trips were made back and forth for 20 months. God had other plans for Stephen. He went to heaven when he was 13. Kendra graduated that year from high school and went into nursing.
A few years later God gave Kendra a very special sweet little girl Phoebe. She immediately became the apple of her Granny Doris' eye. They had a very special bond to this day. Phoebe is now teaching in North Carolina and married to her wonderful husband Jamie. Doris was privileged to have been her “Granny of Honor” in the wedding.
Jerry and Doris traveled all over the US in their RV after retiring. God blessed them with 52 wonderful years together.
In 2012 Doris was diagnosed with breast cancer which she fought hard with the love, support, and prayer of family and so many loving friends. Her church family, and Joy Sunday School Class meant so much to her during her years of chemo. She will be missed; but think of the reunion with her Lord, family, and friends.
Visitation for Doris will take place Monday, August 23, 2021 from 10:00a.m. to 11:00a.m. at Blount & Curry Funeral Home at Garden of Memories, 4207 E. Lake Ave., Tampa, FL 33610, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00a.m.
