Arthur (Art) Johnson, 90, of Wesley Chapel, Florida, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2016 surrounded by loved ones. Art was born on September 18, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. Although growing up in Chicago, Art loved to spend as much time as possible with his Grandparents on their farm in Nadeau, Michigan. After High School he enlisted in the Army and served honorably during WWII. Art began his career in the Construction Industry, specializing in carpentry, with the C.A. Tharnstrom Construction Co.; working many years with them on high rise buildings in Chicago, including the John Hancock Center. Art branched out to begin the notable Arthur Johnson Construction Co. After much success, Art retired with his wife, Marilyn, to Tampa in 1988. He continued to use his skills to buy & sell “fixer uppers”, help out friends and family and with building projects at his church. His idea of retirement was very unique!! During his daughters’ school years, Art served on the Morton Grove School Board over 10 years. He was a member of the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed his service as President in the Morton Grove Lions Club for the Blind, where he spent hundreds of hours fundraising for the Lions. He was part of many other civic organizations. Art was a Mason who spent an exceptional amount of time with his girls participating in activities through Rainbow for Girls. Art was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn Nelson Johnson, and his second wife, Winifred Johnson. Arthur is lovingly remembered and survived by his wife Charlene Atwood Johnson; his daughters Karen (Robert) Beard, Nancy (Edward) King, Julie Johnson; his grandchildren Amanda Beard Dietz, David Beard, Bradley King, Gina Rainero, Eric Rainero, Vince Roy; and great grandchildren Matthew and Annabelle Dietz. A celebration of Art’s life will be held at the Family of Christ Lutheran Church, 16190 Bruce B Downs Blvd., Tampa, FL 33647 on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 1:00PM, with Pastor David Harra officiating.
