

He loved spending time with his family and friends, watching the variety of birds in his yard, and sharing the Gospel every chance he could. He was well known for his humbleness, honesty, and humility, always helping others.
He served the Lord in many capacities including a nursing home ministry of more than 20 years, served as a Pastor of a church, officiated funeral and wedding services, and most recently as a member of Cross Baptist Church in Tampa. AJ was licensed in 1972 and ordained in 1975. Many people came to know Jesus as their Lord and savior through his witnessing.
AJ was a farmer. He worked for 55 years for the Woods family as a manager of their citrus groves and more recently as a grounds manager for Barbara Woods at the horse stables in Land O Lakes, FL.
AJ was preceded in death by his father, Johnnie Alton Smith; his mother Stella King; his infant daughter Teresa; son-in-laws, George Rivera and James Durlak; and infant great granddaughter Kailyn.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, the love of his life for more than 60 years; his brother, Acie Dotson and sister, Peggy Smith; his children: David (Sandy) Smith, Debbie (Bill) Swope, Kathy (Ricky) DeCarlo; his 7 grandchildren, April (Nathan) Seilheimer, David (Rebecca) Smith, Eric (Twila) Smith, Alisha (Erik) Aadland, Theresa Rivera, Alex Rivera, and Jennifer Smith; and 2 great grandchildren, Haylie Seilheimer and Dean Smith.
A visitation for Alton will be held Friday, June 17, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Blount & Curry FH-Carrollwood, 3207 W Bearss Ave, Tampa, FL 33618. A funeral service will occur Friday, June 17, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 3207 W Bearss Ave, Tampa, FL 33618. A graveside service will occur Friday, June 17, 2022 following the funeral service at Lutz Cemetery, 201 5th Ave., Lutz, FL 33549.
