Lou Ellen Derden

Lou Ellen began life’s journey in the autumn of 1945. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, she was the daughter of proud parents Addie Lou and F.E. Kelly. From the beginning, she was nurtured and cared for lovingly, and in turn, Lou Ellen did the same for her parents in their declining years.

After graduating from Tupelo High School, Lou Ellen attended Mississippi State College for Women, and attained a B.S. degree in history and education. She taught high school for two years in West Memphis, Arkansas.

Lou Ellen changed her career course when she married Bill Derden in October 1970. After one more year of teaching, Lou Ellen and Bill welcomed Katherine Nicole into their lives, followed by Celeste Elizabeth two and a half years later.

Lou Ellen was a fantastic wife and mother. She loved her entire family with an enduring love that will last forever.

After her daughters departed for college in Colorado, Lou Ellen secured a position with the Florida Legislature, in the Office of Legislative Services, Lobbyist Registration Office. She remained there for sixteen years as Senior Administrative Assistant.

After retiring in 2010, Lou Ellen was most happy when she was assisting her daughters and taking care of grandchildren. Traveling to many national parks and visiting with cherished family and friends was delightful.

Left behind with blessed memories are Celeste Won (Hoon) and Nicole Murphey (Lance) as well as grandchildren Nicholas, Adelaide, Nathaniel, and Ian, and the loved one who shared forty-nine years of a magnificent married life with her – Bill.

The Derden family expresses its utmost gratitude to all of the Azalea Gardens Alzheimer’s Special Care Center and Big Bend Hospice caregivers who provided comfort, support, and love to Lou Ellen.

Lou Ellen went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 10, 2020. Committal service will be held on 9:00 AM on Monday, January 20th at the Tallahassee National Cemetery.
