John loved the outdoors. As a child I rarely remember him being home after school until dinner time. The first and only nickname was given him by our youngest sibling. When our sibling Sam gave the names for all of his siblings, he was maybe 3 years old. So we all laughed at the names and used them for fun on occasion. John's name fit him well and it was the best nickname any of us received. He was called Go-go.  
When I looked at his notebooks he accumulated during the 2 years he studied at the college preparatory school Peddie, he showed a deep commitment to his history classes. This is not to say that he slacked in the other classes he took. When he graduated, he was 2nd in his class of 1966. I asked him why he wasn't first. He said because he felt sorry for the other guy. He said it meant so much to the other guy that it concerned him. He always read. He loved the outdoors, people, and studies.
I have sometimes wished that John had opted for his bachelor's degree in Marine Science. When the family was no longer able to continue to support his studies at Duke University after 2 years, he found a way to start studying Marine Biology at Florida Atlantic University. Even so, I believe it likely that after pursuing a degree in that field and having a great job and contribution to that field, he well might have found his way into law school. It would be interesting to know what he would have done had he taken that route. 
Because of his great ability to write and understand, he was an inspiration to me in high school and so I wanted to become a writer. He also once expressed to me his desire to either go to law school or become a writer. Whatever he was going to do, it would involve writing. In our youths, he was the idol to me and our sister Susan.

John, Thank you for the greatest gift one can receive. I would not have known what two people can share were it not for you. You taught me truth, honesty, and  trust. You allowed me to reveal myself, unafraid. Together, we were amazed at what we had and carefully tended it. I now carry the treasure of you in my heart forever and I love you, BIG TIME! John always had the most wonderful smile.  I met John in 2011 and we became instant friends.  My love goes out to his children and AnnCi.  He was so proud of his family and very devoted. Dear Alllson and Eric, may the memories of your father and his exemplary life and qualities, and his dreams for both of your lives, reach out and live on into your futures by rewarding you richly with encouragement and strength.

My first impression of John was one of kindness. I came to work at the Court six years ago and while I can't say I worked "with" John, I did work near him. He was very welcoming to the nervous new employee just down the hall. Like everyone who encountered John, I too was struck by his deep love of the law and of his kids. Finally, I will always remember simply how interesting John was -- I guess becaause he was so interested in this crazy world of ours and the people whose paths crossed his.  May he rest in peace.

We were heartbroken to hear of this just last night, and so sorry we didn't know in time to attend his celebration. He was certainly a man to celebrate, one of the loveliest we have been privileged to know. Our hearts are with you.

May God carry you through this time. His love for you was evident in the smile and laughter on your face everytime you talked to him on the phone after getting flowers from him. My favorite picture is him at your Cinderella wedding. Hugs and prayers Allison. The Pittmans

John and I bonded quickly because of our children. We would talk about the joys, and sometimes pitfalls, of raising children. He was there to listen to my stories and smile and say wonderful things about me as a mother and my ability to handle situations. He always encouraged me to continue to make meaningful, and even tough, decisions when necessary. He loved his own children very much and was always quick to share his stories too. His face beamed and glowed when he talked about Eric and Allison. John always had a spring in his step and a smile on his face! John will be missed.

If we are all different colors on an artist's pallet, John is the white paint, a paint that mixes into all the other colors and makes them brighter.  But even after you have mixed the colors, it is not gone--you can see its presence in each of the colors of paint it touched.  As it is with John: we are all different, better, simply because he was in our lives.

With sincere condolences; John was dear to my heart and wonderful person to work around. He  loved each of you dearly and talked about you with pure joy. I will miss our conversations and smiles.  I pray that the Lord comfort each of you daily, "Godspeed"

John was a caring and thoughtful co-worker -- always ready with a kind word of encouragement and a smile.  He also had a great intellect and contributed much to the law of Florida during his many years as a staff attorney at the Florida Supreme Court.  Above all, he was a proud Dad who shared stories about his children and their accomplishments and how much he loved them!  He will be greatly missed.  Susan & Michael O'Halloran

John was a swimming friend and a friend at work. I met him at the Meyers Park swimming pool, probably ten years back. We got to be better friends, once I began work at the Court just a few years later.  He was a spiffy dresser and since I have been known to don a tie or two at work, we always joked about our attire. At work, I plan to, randomly, put on my jeans, my light linen sports jacket and an exotic shirt and tie, all in honor of my friend, John. When anyone asks about my outfit, I'm going to say that "John taught me everything I know." And, what I know is that he was a fine person, a great athlete, and a very smart man that I admired. Thank you, John, for adding dimension to our lives.

Dear Allison and Eric; I had the good fortune to know John for over 20 years.  We worked together at the Court and I also was your neighbor at Meridian Place.  We often talked of our children and I know how much he loved and and adored you.  He will be sorely missed.  Sincerely, David Pepper

In loving memory of my beautiful, brave little brother and the amazing man and father he became.  He was the best and the brightest:  Tarzan to my Jane and late brother Bucky's Cheetah;  right-hand man when weilding our wooden swords and shields against "the gang over the hill"; first in line to be given a polio vaccination and the only one who didn't cry - a leader, a hero, and, closest to his heart...a father to two extraordinary children.
