John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Florentina Camacho Gray, son Mark Stephen Gray of Washington, DC; a loving daughter Lisa Marie Gray of Tallahassee, FL; and brother Mays Leroy Gray of Tallahassee, FL.
John received his training and certification in Architectural Drafting prior to enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1953. After his training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX, he was assigned to the 13th Air Force, Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines as Supervisor of Statistical Section of the Comptroller Division. After his tour of duty with the 13th AFB, John was assigned to the Air Force Base in Mobile, AL assuming the same job and promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received the Korean Defense Medal, National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. In 1956 after his tour of duty, John went to work with the FL Department of Transportation as a Traffic Engineer until he retired in 1990. John enjoyed his retirement, riding in the woods, watching wildlife, deep sea fishing and fishing in the lakes. He also loved to paint the world around him and visiting with family and friends that lived close by.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie Mays & Betty Gray; sister Audrey Hampton, and brother Marvin Gray.
Family will receive friends on Friday, December 3, 2010 from 4:30pm until 6:30pm at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, FL. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 9:00 am Saturday December 4, 2010 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, with graveside service to follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to John's home after conclusion of the service.
John will be remembered and missed by all as a very humble, honest, loving, kind and generous man with a friendly face and open hand.
