Jerry D. Gessner, 79, of Tallahassee, FL, passed at home on Thursday, April 26, 2018. Jerry was “born free” in Charity Hospital, New Orleans, LA, and grew up in Hammond, LA. He served in the United States Navy; where he learned printing. He used his printing skills at various companies, including Rose Printing Company in Tallahassee, FL, where he moved in the 1960s. He worked in food service and in institutional food sales before working for the Florida Department of Revenue, where he also frequently volunteered for the Red Cross. His last employment included driving cancer patients and workers’ compensation patients to treatment.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dr. Linda J. Gessner. They travelled extensively and frequently, visiting all fifty states. Together they raised two daughters, Dawn Adkins (Ron) of Ormond Beach, and Caroline Johnson (Dean) of Tallahassee; and enjoyed spending time with their eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom survive.
He is also survived by his brother Dr. Ralph J. Gessner (Susan) of New Orleans; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Emily Gessner; and a brother Riley Manton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice or Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (401 Hacknsack Ave. 9th floor, Hackensack, NJ 07601.)
At Jerry’s request, there will be no formal service held.
