

Jay Douglas Thompson, 90, from Tallahassee, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2025. Born in Independence, Iowa, on June 20, 1934, to schoolteacher Iva May Allen and former Iowa state representative George Levi Thompson, Jay lived a full and meaningful life, touching hearts all over.
Jay graduated from the University of Florida with a BS in Building Construction and a Masters in Civil Engineering. He was dedicated to learning, and his studies paved the way for his successful career. Jay was also a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
On June 7, 1958, Jay married Eleanor Rae Winder, lovingly known as Elna. They shared 66 years of love, support, and commitment, building a beautiful family and creating many cherished memories.
Jay's career in engineering and construction started with Buckeye Corporation in Perry, Florida. He then spent 25 years at Proctor and Gamble, working in places like Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania; Crailsheim, Germany; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. His work has made a lasting impact on many communities.
In 1987, Jay and Elna moved to Tallahassee, Florida where he worked with Watkins Engineers and Constructors, and then Dillingham Construction. He took on projects across the southeastern United States and even worked internationally in the Philippines. Jay was respected for his commitment and ability to adapt to new challenges.
Outside of work, Jay was a devoted member of Christ Presbyterian Church. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life, and he was active in his church community as a deacon and an elder.
Jay had many interests outside of his professional life. He loved traveling in his Airstream trailer, exploring the United States with Elna. He was an enthusiastic wood turner, creating beautiful pieces. Bird watching, genealogy, and hiking were also among his hobbies. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family.
Jay is survived by his wife, Elna; their three children: Lisa Hugo and her husband Ernie, Tricia Burgess and her husband Rick, and Doug Thompson and his wife Beth. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all carrying forward his legacy of love and dedication.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Jay's life will be held on April 19, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Christ Presbyterian Church, 2317 Bannerman Rd, Tallahassee, Florida. Friends and family are welcome to come and honor Jay's remarkable life.
A Military Inurnment will take place on Monday, April 21, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Tallahassee National Cemetery. Jay's service to his country will be respectfully honored.
