A retired U.S. Navy Commander, Reid was born on his family’s farm in Alexander City, Alabama, on October 25, 1936. The eldest of four boys, his family moved to Perry, Florida, in 1937. He graduated in 1954 from Bay High School in Panama City. Reid earned his bachelor’s degree in finance and management from Florida State University in 1959, after which he completed flight school at Naval Air Station Pensacola and was commissioned as a naval officer.
In 1960, Reid married Suzanne Swann of Orlando, Florida. The two met while students at FSU. Together they had three children – Matthew, Alison, and David – and were stationed with the Navy throughout the world. Retiring from the military after 23 years, he and Suzanne moved to Opp, Alabama, where they owned a cattle farm. Their love for FSU drew them back to Tallahassee in 1993, where they have lived ever since.
Reid was especially proud of his family, taking every opportunity to laugh and love with his children and grandchildren, and to share stories about them with his friends. Reid and Suzanne shared a passion for travel, visiting six continents, countless countries, and 47 U.S. states. He was an avid golfer and fisherman, and enjoyed hosting fish fries. Reid was always willing to help a neighbor in need, for which he received the City of Tallahassee’s Neighbor of the Year award.
Reid was a member of Killearn United Methodist Church, where he served on the church’s mission committee, was shoebox coordinator, communion server, and went on many mission trips.
Reid is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Suzanne; children Matthew Reid Moon (Julie), Alison Blair Adams (Mark), and David Moon. Reid has eight grandchildren – Jonathan Moon, Brandon Moon, Tyler Miele, Ryan Campbell, Christopher Moon, Grant Adams (Adrianna), Emily Adams, and Jacob Adams – and a great-granddaughter, Isabella Adams. He is also survived by two brothers, Timothy Moon (Patrice), and David Moon; sister-in-law Mary Jo Neely (Dick); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Grace Moon, and brother William Moon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Killearn United Methodist Church Mission Committee (2800 Shamrock St. S, Tallahassee, FL 32309), Big Bend Hospice (1723 Mahan Center Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32308), or other deserving charity.
