Born on December 9, 1920 in Dallas, N.C., he graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Fla. and continued his education at The University of Florida. He joined The United States Marine Corps in early 1942 and achieved the rank of Staff Sargeant before the end of the World War II. Graduating from University of Florida in 1948 with a BS in Horticulture, he went on to a 27-year career with Florida State University, 4 years with Capital City Country Club, 15 years with the City of Tallahassee, and owned and operated his own wholesale nursery.
Henry spent many years as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at Immanuel Baptist Church in Tallahassee, Fla. He became a member of The Free Masons in 1949 and was a past president of The Florida Turf Grass Association.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, of 46 years, Dorothy Best Martin, a stepson, a grandson, 3 granddaughters and a great-grandson. He is survived by his wife Pollyann Martin, his children Jane Kahler (David), Bonnie Varble (Robert), Nellie Allen (Jim), Betty Williams Prather, Roy Martin (Loretta), Jennifer Robinson (Doug), and 22 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 4 great great-grandchildren.
A private family graveside service will be held in Tallahassee, Fla. A memorial service will be held in Travelers Rest, S.C. at Jackson Grove United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 14 at 9:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Jackson Grove UMC (PO Box 1683, Travelers Rest, S.C. 29690) or to a favorite Hospice.
