Harold was born on July 10, 1937, to Dr. Harold and Geraldine Griffith in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school, he joined the Marine Corps, where he served overseas, and proudly fought for his country in the Korean War.
In 1970, Harold met Carol on a blind date arranged by a family member, who thought they would be perfect for each other. After their 52 years together, she might have been right!
Throughout his life, Harold had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid nature lover, and was happiest whenever he was outside in the woods or his garden. He loved building, woodworking and canoeing, until arthritis made it impossible. He always had a home improvement project in the works, much to his wife’s dismay. He was also deeply fascinated by the future and its technologies. He loved science fiction and stories about the promise of tomorrow. He would always dream about the possibility that his grandchildren or great grandchildren might one day walk on the surface of Mars. He also had a deep love for all animal life and its preservation. He would proclaim that he was done with having pets but, after each new animal found its way into his life, he never failed to make room for just one more.
Harold was a notorious jokester and loved to tease the ones he loved the most. He will be remembered fondly for his one-of-a-kind Happy Birthday serenades that we were all fortunate enough to endure. If you knew Harold, you know how proud he was of being a Marine, a father and a grandfather and most of his wardrobe proved this.
Harold was predeceased by his son Spencer, father Dr. Harold Griffith and mother Geraldine Crowther. He is survived by his best friend of 52 years, wife Carol, daughter Elizabeth Lepre (Dick), son Ryan Griffith (Jessica), daughter Gretchen Winters (Drew). He was a beloved Papa to his 5 grandchildren, Madison (21), Spencer (18), Austin (17), Isabella (16) and Cayson (8). He also had 2 brothers and 4 sisters, and “that dog he didn’t want”, his beloved Molly.
A celebration of his life will be held at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home on Riggins Road on May 21st at 3pm and he will be laid to rest at the Tallahassee National Cemetery at a later date.
Until we meet again, Semper Fi!
