Ann Lee-on Lo

Ann Lee-on Lo, 81, passed away peacefully January 4, 2021 at her home in Duluth, Georgia, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born July 3, 1939 in Hong Kong, the fourth in a large and lively family of six siblings.

Ann graduated in 1960 from St. Paul’s Coeducational College and received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Hong Kong in 1963. She taught secondary school for two years and entered the PhD program in history at the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a Regents Scholar. On September 2, 1967, Ann married Winston Lo, then a PhD student at Harvard. She left Berkeley with a master’s degree in history and moved with her husband to Tallahassee, graduating in 1969 from Florida State University’s School of Library Science with a second master’s degree.

Ann worked at FSU’s Strozier Library, the State Library of Florida, and at the Tallahassee Community College Library, from which she retired in 1997. A loving and devoted sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, Ann capably balanced the needs of her family with her own career. While working full-time, she continued her independent research into eclectic Chinese historical topics, presenting several conference papers over the years.

A petite, vivacious, modest yet stylish woman, Ann’s hobbies included cooking, interior design, and fashion. She followed sports (especially Seminole football and professional basketball), current events, and politics.

Ann was a member of several churches in Tallahassee, including Piedmont Park Alliance Church, Thomasville Road Baptist Church, and was a founding member of the Tallahassee Chinese Christian Church, where she served as a deacon and Bible study teacher for many years. After moving to metro Atlanta in 2014, she joined the Atlanta Baptist Chinese Church, where she briefly led Bible study before becoming too ill. Friends and family sought and benefitted from her wise Christian counsel and influence, which will be greatly missed.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Florence Hsu, and by her brother, Dr. Roy Hsu (Anne). She is survived by her husband of 53 years, FSU Professor Emeritus of History, Winston Lo; her sons, Michael and Jonathan (Jennifer); and her beloved grandchildren, Juliana and Johnny. She leaves behind her siblings, Margaret Wong (Dr. James Wong), Lillian Lam (Paul), Dr. David Hsu (Kathy), and Dr. George Hsu (Vivienne). She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and their families; in-laws; and many dear friends in both Tallahassee and metro Atlanta.

A visitation will be held on January 16, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Tallahassee Chinese Christian Church, 8801 Centerville Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32309 with the funeral service to follow. A private family burial will be held at 3:00 PM at Culley’s MeadowWood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Rd.
