Virgil J. Davis of Tahlequah died peacefully in his sleep on Friday morning, November 28, 2014. He was born March 30, 1921 to Virgil Ham and Myrtle Mae (Henson) Davis in Sallisaw, OK. Virgil was the fifth of six children with two surviving sisters: Gladys Cook of Southwest, MO.; and Ruby Kleiss of Wagoner, OK.
Virgil married Leara Mae Wherry on May 26, 1942. Two months later Virgil joined the Army and he fought with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II. Virgil and Leara were married 45 years and had two children: Jerry W. Davis of Tahlequah, and Barbara Calmes of Shawnee. Leara died in 1987, and he married his second wife, Christine Dos, in 1989. She preceded him in death in 2009 after being married for 20 years.
Those that preceded him in death include his parents, two brothers; Mack and Paul Davis, and one sister Thelma Davis.
Surviving relatives include the following: Stepson, Tommy Dos; daughter, Barbara Calmes and husband, Paul Calmes; son Jerry W. Davis and wife Kelly Davis; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; numerous cousins; and many nieces and nephews.
Virgil was a boiler maker and backhoe operator during his working years, and he worked on projects in twelve states with most of them being in the South. He loved the Lord and prayer. He liked to say, “the Lord gave me love for everybody.” He truly had a remarkable way of witnessing to God’s love and grace.
Services for Virgil will be held at the Reed-Culver Chapel, 117 W. Delaware, Tahlequah, OK on Tuesday, December 2, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to missions through Interlink Ministries, Pastor Steve Calmes, P.O.
