Funeral Services for Jackie “Jack” R. Owen will be held on Saturday, April 21st, 2018 at 2:00 Pm at Reed-Culver Chapel with Reverend David Wiens officiating. His visitation with family will be held on Friday, April 20th, 2018 at Reed-Culver Chapel beginning at noon until 6:00 PM. He will be laid to rest at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery with full Military Honors on Tuesday, April 24th, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Ft. Gibson, OK. Online condolences for his family may be left at www.reedculver.com.
Jack R. Owen was born on October 22nd, 1949 in Ardmore, OK, the son of Elmo and Lola (Almon) Owen. He grew up in a household with six brothers and sisters, Tony, Billy, Bob, Marilyn, Debbie and Mary. Jack and his family lived in Ardmore, Oklahoma City, and Norman. The family would then relocate to Texas, living in Lubbock, Amarillo, Dallas, Houston, and finally Bonham. Eventually, they returned to Ardmore, making this their home. Jack had to quit school at 15 years of age, his parents were both in failing health, and at 19, Jack, became the manager of a family restaurant. When he turned twenty, Jack was drafted into the US Army serving from September 29th. 1970 until his honorable discharge and retirement October 1st, 2000, for a total of thirty years service to his country. He served four tours in Korea and two tours in Germany. He served in capacities such as enlisted aide to a 4 Star General, Cook, Diet Cook, Supply Sergeant, Troop Issue Subsistence Officer, First Sergeant, and finally as Command Sergeant Major, the highest enlisted rank, commanding three battalions and two brigades. His many awards and medals include Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service medals, seven Army Commendation Medals, ten Good Conduct Awards, two National Service Medals, Humanitarian Service Medal, five Overseas Service Ribbons, four Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development ribbons, Army Service ribbon, five Overseas Service ribbons, and both Expert Marksmanship Badge with Pistol Bar and Rifle Bar. He acquired his Associates Degree and Bachelors degree while in the military. Following his retirement, he gained his Masters of Human Relations, and became a school counselor at Inola Middle School. Jack finally obtained his License as a Professional Counselor, LPC.
He married Sharon (Stopp) Skold in 1996 at Ft. Sill in Lawton, OK. Together they enjoyed twenty two years of memories. He loved any time spent with his family, and his grandchildren were the best people on earth! He adored them. A Christian by faith, Jack was always the neighbor that was there to lend a helping hand, help where he could and always shared that wonderful smile. His health began to fail him, and the Lord called this good and faithful servant home from his labors on April 16th, 2018 in Tulsa, OK. Jack was 68 years old. He served his country honorably all of his life, and loved his family unconditionally. He will be greatly missed.
Jack is preceded in death by his mother, father, and his grandparents.
Those left to cherish jack’s memory include his loving wife, Sharon of the home in Wagoner. He leaves his children, John Kristoffer Skold and wife Courtney of Weatherford, TX, Monica Owen Smigel of Lawton, OK, Jennifer Owen Mendoza of Lawton, OK, and Michelle Pittman and husband Johnny of Siloam Springs, AR. He leaves his brothers and sisters, Tony Owen and wife Linda of Lincoln, CA, Billy Owen and wife Pam of Ardmore, OK, Bob Owen and wife Anne of Tonitown, AR, Marilyn Gunsolus and husband Ronnie of Ardmore, OK, Debbie Marsh and husband Shane of Utah, and Mary Jeffcoats and husband Jimmy of Ardmore, OK. Jack lives on in his 9 grandchildren, Alex Mendoza, Jordan Mendoza, Samantha Mendoza, Hannah Pittman, Cole Pittman, Kamdyn Skold, Madison Thomas, Kaben Brasel, and Morgan Brasel, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
