Gertrude May Cook- Walker was born on November 10th, 1931 in Three Rivers, TX, the daughter of Albert Bryant and Ida May (Moon) Cook. She was raised with one brother and three sisters, Albert Jr, Mildred, Naomi Faye and Edith. Upon completing her high school, she started her studies at NSU, desiring to obtain her teaching certificate. She would meet and marry her best friend, Jack Eugene Walker on September 11th, 1948 in Three Rivers TX. Together they would raise four sons and two daughters, Jackie Jr, Carolyn, Ricky Dale, Dwight Allen, Melvin Bryant, and Sharon Beth. Gertrude was the definition of hard working, determined and grateful. She split wood with a chopping axe, cooked huge meals three times a day on a wood cook stove, and never missed the chance to tell those around her how much she loved and adored them. As a child, she helped her daddy pick cotton and milk the cows. She never out grew her ability to look after others and make life for them just a little bit better. She raised the most wonderful vegetable gardens and canned every bit to feed her family in the winter ahead. Her meals were fantastic, and you could not beat her chocolate gravy, chicken and dumplings, berry and peach cobblers, and her light as air cakes. Every birthday in the family was treated to one of her cakes. She never forgot a family members birthday or Christmas. She sewed and patched jeans, worked the flower beds, and worked at both the Greenleaf and Ozark nurseries. Her family always came first with her. If they needed something, she went out of her way to make it happen for them. She was a devout Christian woman, reading her Bible daily, and singing the old gospel favorites while going about her daily chores. She enjoyed music of all kinds and especially John Denver. She never complained, that was not her way. She kept that sweet and loving smile on her face at all times, working til the sun went down. She was a member of the Come and Dine Church for her lifetime. The Lord called this wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt home from her labors on Wednesday, September 30th, 2020 in Tahlequah, OK, surrounded by the family she cherished do much. She was 88 years old, and can never be replaced.
She is preceded in death by her Grandpa and Grandma Jesse Moon, Grandma and Grandpa Cook, her Mom and Dad, her husband Jack in 1996, one sister and one brother, Albert Bryant Cook Jr and Mildred Hitt, her son, Dwight Allen Walker, and two grandsons, Jackie Eugene Crawford and Jerry Gene Hutson.
