MIKE WALSH, Korean War veteran, artist, writer, husband, father, and grandfather, died on February 9 in his home in Syosset, NY. Born in the Bronx, New York, on January 20, 1934, to Ann (nee Christopher) and Maurice Walsh both originally from Newfoundland, Canada then the Bronx, New York. He was the second eldest son, surviving John James, Margaret, and Maurice Walsh, Jr.
His career as an art director during New York city’s booming advertising industry spanned from late 1950s through the 1990s. He often hand-lettered typefaces and developed logos for major corporations that in one image captured their full essence. He won awards for unique designs for annual reports as well as honors for fine art paintings of which he painted nearly 100. Subjects ranged from seascapes and landscapes to wild animals. He especially loved wolves and housed many dogs in his life. As a storyteller, he wrote and self-published novels having to do with occult and survival themes.
He attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, graduating with honors in 1952 and served from 1954 to ‘56 in the Personnel Engineers Division in Okinawa during the Korean War. He later became an active member of Post 175 American Legion in Syosset, overseeing positions such as treasurer and production of the monthly newsletter.
He is survived by his beloved wife Theresa (Terri) Mary (nee Borowik) whom he married in 1958 and spent 64 loving years together. He was a beloved father to Kathleen Mary and her husband James S. Asmus of Syosset, NY and their three children: Matthew (Corrie) Megan (Matt), and Gregory; as well as Mary Ellen of Albertson, NY and her three children: Robert, Kelly, and Melanie.
