Sylvania – Jean Mobley Newton, age 96, passed away Friday, December 7, 2018 at Screven County Hospital in Sylvania, GA. She was born on September 22nd, 1922 in Cypress, Florida to Fred Lee Mobley, Sr. and Rossie Clyde Shuler Mobley. Her father owned a turpentine operation in what is now Apalachicola National Forest and around 1923, the operation was moved from Florida to Sylvania, Georgia. Mrs. Newton was a resident of Screven County since the age of 2 and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Sylvania after being accepted at the age of 12. She was Salutatorian of her graduating class from Sylvania High School and was a cheerleader. She graduated with honors from Georgia State Woman’s College, which is now Valdosta State University, with a B.A. Degree in English Literature. As President of one of the college clubs, she was one of the hosts when First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited the college. During World War II, Mrs. Newton worked as a civilian employee of the Department of Defense at Turner Army Airfield near Albany, Georgia, to help support the war effort. After the war, she returned to Sylvania to work with her father and brothers at Mobley Lumber Company. Subsequently she was secretary to the President of the Bank of Screven County.
Mrs. Newton and Paul Keller Newton, Sr. were married in a religious ceremony at her parents’ home on November 11th, 1950. After making their home in Sylvania for several years, they moved to the Halcyondale Community, where she had a role in the family farming operation. They were married for Fifty years. She was a member of the Halcyondale Homemakers Club and as well as being a member of Sylvania First United Methodist Church, she attended Union Baptist Church for many years where she occasionally taught a Sunday School Class. Mrs. Newton was predeceased by her parents and her husband as well as her sister, Doris Mobley Callis, and her two brothers, Fred Lee Mobley, Jr. and William Robert Mobley.
Mrs. Newton is survived by her two sons, Allen Shuler Newton and Paul Keller (Mary Ann Moore) Newton, Jr., sister-in-law, Vicki Lariscy Mobley, three nieces, Mary Mobley Horton, Elaine Mobley and Eleanor Gladding, two nephews, William Robert Mobley, Jr. and Lee Andrew Mobley, numerous great-nieces/nephews and great-great-nieces/nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Thompson Strickland Waters Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ricky Varnell officiating. Interment at Screven County Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Billy Mobley, Lee Mobley, Thomas J. Pelham, Andrew Shuler Pelham, Christian Butler Pelham, Michael Newton, Allen Daley and Koelker Pfeiffer.
