Fred was born November 1, 1940 to Posey and Avie (Mathis) Maney in Cherokee, NC. He was one of the youngest of 12 siblings. He met the love of his life, Patricia Ann Chaffin, in the summer of 1969 while working at a hotel in Cherokee where her family vacationed. He moved to Alabama in October of that year and they married in December 1969. They were happily married for 33 years.
Fred worked 34 years at Avondale Mills as a technician in the Indigo Dye House before coming out on medical retirement. Even then he worked many more years as a crossing guard at Sylacauga High School and a senior citizen bus driver at the Town of Oak Grove. He also volunteered for over 40 years with the Coosa Valley Rescue Squad, serving as treasurer for many of those years. The majority of his time in Alabama, he was a member of Marble City Baptist Church. Then he drove one of the buses for the youth group in the 1970's. In more recent years, he served as the direct of Sunday School.
Fred is survived by his daughter and son-in-love, Randall and Ginger Maney McDonough of Sylacauga; sister, Marie Maney Sturgill of Rutherford College, NC; special niece, Barbara Shook of Bryson City, NC and multiple other nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Ann Chaffin Maney, his parents Posey and Avie Mathis Maney, six brothers and four sisters.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 18, 2024 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Curtis and Son North Chapel. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 2:00 PM with Pastor James Long officiating at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel.
Fred will be laid to rest in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are Willis Whatley, Tab Goggans, Tony Goggans, Chris Ragsdale, and Daryl Strickland. Honorary pallbearers are Wade Ezekiel, Lauf Henden, Donnie Landers, Tracey Milam and Carson Grier.
