Sydney
Our hearts are broken. It is with the deepest of sadness that we, the family of William “Tapper” Murphy announce his death, July 24, 2010, Sydney, at the “wonderful” age of 91 years. Bill’s Irish life was a “true adventure”. Born William Henry at South Bar, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late William Murphy and the former Margaret Nunn. While Bill’s early years were spent growing up in South Bar, and later living in Sydney, his truly blessed years were those he spent at the labour of his love, the bungalow in East Bay. Bill proudly joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on active service in 1942, serving in Washington, DC, becoming a corporal until his departure to another phase of his life, in 1946. He worked for Sydney Steel for forty-three years, retiring in 1980 to his paradise, the bungalow. His marriage to Mary Josephine Dawe in 1948, resulted in the birth of five Irish children who loved him dearly; Donna Marie (John), Maureen Elizabeth (Rob), Billy (Louise), Michael (Wendy) and Robert (Suzanne). Bill was blessed to have had twelve grandchildren, and they have been equally blessed to have spent time with him. Bill’s Irish roots grew deep and we are proud to say they spread to all of us. Growing up in South Bar, Bill developed a love of boxing, both participating in the sport as well as following the careers of many Maritime boxers. Bill was an avid swimmer, rock collector, gardener and all round outdoorsman. He loved animals, birds; dogs always lived where dad lived; horse racing was his passion. Bill has imparted wonderful and important life skills to his family. He challenged himself always, stood behind his decisions, cared deeply for his friends and family and he had true respect for the environment. Bill will truly be missed by anyone who spent time with him and were lucky enough to share his space. Bill was blessed to have a long term caregiver who was not only exceptional in her care giving skills, she treated dad like her own father and to dad she was like another daughter. Thank you Lucy Branton. Dad was also blessed to be surrounded by the “Ashby Boys”, who never ceased to respond to him, in his time of need, Thank you boys. We love you dad. Visitation for the late Mr. Murphy will be on Tuesday 2 -4 and 7-9 p.m. at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Saint Theresa’s Church, Rev. J. Oliver officiating with reception immediately following mass at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 12, Dorchester Street. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Parkinson Society or Charity of choice. On-line condolences may be sent to T.W. Curry.com.
