Theresa was born in Rear Christmas Island on June 18,1929 the daughter of the late Alexander Joseph MacKenzie and Margaret Catherine MacKenzie and sister to Hector, Mike, Joe, Annie, Mary Ann, Catherine, Peggy, Jimmy, and Flora. She was also a beloved aunt to her numerous nieces and nephews.
In her younger years, Theresa did domestic work around Sydney, Cape Breton, and then around the Boston and Cape Cod areas of Massachusetts, along with time spent helping on the family farm in Cape Breton. On one of her trips back to the States, Theresa met the love of her life, James Joseph George of Sandwich, Massachusetts and they were married on September 16, 1961. Theresa and Jimmy had twin sons which they raised in Sandwich, Massachusetts until 1981 when they all moved to Christmas Island, NS where they lived and were active members of St. Barra Parish.
A wake will be held at St. Barra Church & Christmas Island Communities Centre, Christmas Island on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 from 4pm to 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at St. Columba Church, Iona at 11am with Reverend Victor Ozonoh officiating. Following the mass there will be interment in St. Barra Cemetery, Christmas Island, and following the internment everyone is invited back to the Christmas Island Firehall for a cup of tea or coffee and a light lunch.
