Michael Francis Mahoney “Mike,” 93, of Sydney River/ North Side East Bay, departed to rejoin his loving wife Sally on Monday, August 8th, 2022. Mike’s last few years were spent at the Northside Guest Home.
Mike was born in Sydney on October 11, 1928, the only son of Michael and Maggie (Wade) Mahoney. He was proud to have grown up on Victoria Road in Ashby with his five sisters. Mike was an avid hockey and baseball player. Throughout Mike’s life, he demonstrated the power of hard work and dedication to his family.
Mike worked for DEVCO as a draftsman and then went into Industrial relations and security. Mike worked hard and took pride in his job(s); our family was lucky to hear stories about what a good man he was to have as a co-worker. We are privileged to have been shown that hard work, dedication, and kindness go a long way.
Mike deeply loved his wife, Sally. Talking about dad without mentioning mom is difficult because they came as a pair. Late into their eighties, they could be seen walking hand in hand on Fatima Dr or dancing together in the window. Almost as if it was one name and person, you couldn’t have one without the other. We were lucky to be shown unconditional love as Mike always told Sally yes for a dance, shared his ice cream, and went along with her plans with a smile. Mike loved his time at the bungalow in East Bay. As his family grew up, Mike would move them to East Bay for the summer. He especially loved Sundays when his siblings would bring their families to the bungalow. He would be in his glory, having over fifty people out for a swim and a barbeque. Mike also enjoyed his time swimming, bowls of strawberries and cream, and family time at the bungalow until his late 80s.
Mike could often be heard cheering (yelling) for his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs whenever a game was on, having an evening fire at East Bay and enjoying anything sweet, especially doughnuts.
Mike was known affectionately as “Uncle Mic” to his many nieces and nephews and as “Pop” to his grandchildren. Mike enjoyed teasing the kids and would delight in seeing them smile. He had a warm smile and a warmer heart. He loved to surround himself with the sounds of people having fun.
It is hard for our family to say goodbye to such a great man, someone who always provided a warm smile, generosity, and kindness that extended to everyone. His love for life will continue with his family, along with his habit of hiding chocolate.
Mike is survived by his children Allen (Joan), Howie Centre, Kathy, Coxheath, Paul (Dawn), Sydney River, Margo Kozera (Rob), Westmount and Laura, Sydney River: 5 grandchildren Mark
Mahoney (Alicia Hutchings and son Avery) Michael Mahoney (Carla Ross), Matthew Mahoney (Brittany Morrison), Ian Mahoney, and Andrea Mahoney. Great Grandchildren Isabella and Kaius Mahoney, sister Vangie Corbett, USA.
Mike was predeceased by his wife and best friend Sara “Sally,” daughter-in-law Joan, sisters Nellie Muise, Margaret MacNeil, Rachel Martin and Loie Dunn.
