It is with great sadness we have to announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our dear mother, Margaret May Delaney, Sydney, NS. Marg passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s palliative care unit, on March 30th, 2023, with her family by her side. Born August 5th, 1930, in Lavant, Lanark County, Ontario, Margaret was the daughter of Jack and Lila (Slater) Umpherson.
She was a very active person who loved life, and was very loveable. She was also a very sociable lady, who loved meeting people. She had many good friends whom she cherished, and called quite frequently. Marg thoroughly enjoyed her Sunday trips to the mall with her close friends, where she made many instant new friends with every sales person she met. From her younger years, right up until four weeks ago, Marg was an avid and excellent bowler. Starting with many years of 5 pin, in Ontario, and carrying through to mixed leagues at the earlier lanes in Sydney, to mixed leagues on Friday and Tuesdays, in Sydney Mines. She was a member of many winning teams, and in her younger years won numerous individual trophies for high average, high single, and high triple. She also loved watching baseball on TV. She was a true-Blue Jays fan and watched almost every game. Her other favorite pastime was going out to eat. She was ready to go for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or coffee, any day, anywhere, or anytime. Marg met her late husband, Gerald, in Toronto, where they were a very happy couple until his passing 49 years later. Together they operated a business on Lakeshore Blvd in Mississauga for 20 years, until retiring in 1983. They then resided between Toronto and Sydney, until moving here permanently in 1990.
Marg is survived by her son Gerald (Warna) Delaney, her grandsons Jerry (Cindy) Rothesay, NB, and Lloyd, Fort Good Hope, NWT, great-grandsons Jake (Chelsea), and Matt Delaney, Jordan (Abby) McKinley, and great grand-daughters Megan and Kristen McKinley, sisters in law Thelma Umpherson, Cecelia, Marie, and Ruth Delaney, Agnes MacIntyre, brothers in law Joe Delaney, and Pat (Myrna) Delaney.
