We are deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend Kenneth George MacDougall, on December 28, 2021 with his oldest daughter Jean Marie by his side. Born in Inverness on April 9, 1929, George was the youngest child of Helen Jean (MacKenzie) and Bertram Camillus MacDougall. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was the self-proclaimed record holder for the MacDougall family member who lived to be the oldest.
Dad was raised in Inverness and began his career with the Royal Bank working in Inverness and Halifax before transferring to Nassau for 3 years. There his love for the warm climate and calypso music grew, however the love awaiting him back home was much stronger. He followed his true love Catherine Rebecca (Betty) Finn to Windsor and Montreal. They were married on July 1, 1957, in Inverness and settled in Sydney. It was there George began a career in sales, working initially with his brother Lauchie, then Domtar, and Bristol Myers up until his retirement.
Dad was committed to community and took his responsibility seriously. For many years he was active in the United Commercial Travelers, and he was honored to be a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus organization. Dad played/coached several sports including baseball and hockey in his younger years and curling and golf as the children were growing up and later in life. He served as President of the Sydney Curling Club where he was an “Honorary” lifetime member, and enjoyed many years as a member of the Lingan Golf Club. Dad loved to replay curling or golf shots many times over and to discuss the latest sports events and news.
The love shared between Dad and Mom was amazing. They enjoyed their travels far and wide, but always looked forward to getting back to Cape Breton. Spending time in his beloved Strathlorne, with countless hours in the gardens and working around the property, brought him much peace and enjoyment.
Dad was devoted to his family. He was proud of all of his children and grandchildren and was always enthusiastic about their latest accomplishments while providing encouragement and advice on future plans. Being able to play and talk sports/games with his children, grandchildren and friends brought a smile to his face until the day he died. Dad loved all types of music and dancing. He was even known to play his harmonica into the wee hours after an evening celebration or get together with family and friends. Memories of Scrabble and card games in Strathlorne; Cribbage games that ended with “the important thing is…Did you learn anything?”; Christmas Amaretto; Books and Crossword puzzles galore; and the napkin mouse are but a few. We each have our own fond memories of time spent with our Dad/Poppy and will cherish those memories of a good man who we were truly blessed to have had in our lives.
George is survived by his children Jean Marie (Wayne McKay), Claire (Garney) Westhaver, Ken (Amy), Brian (Ann-Marie), Wayne (Denise Howatson); grandchildren Kyle (Maria), Amanda (Matt), Jarett and Jordan MacNeil; Michael and Alexander Westhaver; Maelyn MacDougall; Shamus and Keelan MacDougall, Eric Goulden; Cody (Meaghan) and Keegan MacDougall, Brett Rendell; Great-grandsons Eliot, Albert and Oliver MacDougall; Sister-in-law Esther Finn. Several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Besides his parents and loving wife Betty, George was predeceased by his siblings and their spouses Caroline, Lauchie (Sadie), Lorne (Kathleen), Beatrice (Charlie), Bertram (Harriett): mother and father-in law Catherine ‘Katie’ and Neil Gunn Finn; brother-in-law and dear friend Stanley Finn.
When Mom passed away in 2016, Dad lost his best friend and was broken hearted. For almost 4 years he drove to the cemetery every day to visit until he stopped driving at 90 years old. He would often say “cha bhi e fada a-nis” (it won’t be long now). Well Dad…your wait is finally over. We see you giving us one last wave as you leave us now and will miss you dearly but know you are where you want to be.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Steven MacDougall for his care over many years. To the staff and volunteers of Maple Hill Manor - for your care, support, and kindness when Dad needed it most - we are forever grateful.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Due to current restrictions a private family funeral Mass will be held on January 4, 2022 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, at 11 am with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. To join livestream or leave condolences please visit TW Curry facebook page or by visiting www.twcurry.com
